Sorry for such a boring topic, but.... what's the hive mind's view re which Shimano Road pedals?
I'm thinking 105 level (GBP62ish) - Ultegra are another GBP25 or so - is there any gain other than a fancier name on the side?
Likewise, there's some much cheaper options - R540/550 for around half the price of 105's - are they also just fine or is it a false economy for some reason?
They're for a "nice" summer bike BTW - the commuter will keep SPDs to avoid clip-clopping around work on the way to the changing room in road shoes.
I've got the cheap ones R540 or something.
They're fine....I imagine there are lighter options out there depending on how bothered by that you are.
But then I'm perfectly happy with the cheap 520 mtb pedals...I've got XT on one bike and can't really tell the difference.

Ultegra, then.
What groupset do you have? Match that. Or equivalent level. Sole reason I have DA pedals
105 have a metal cleat plate that doesn't squeak.
540 have a plastic plate that squeaks.
In my experience obvs.
Save some money and get the Wiggle / Lifeline ones £18. Use shimno cleats or there own replacements for £5. Same weight or lighter than 105 super crips engagement and made by the same people that makr the Garmin Vector innards.
R550. Unless you care about a 25g weight saving, there is no reason to buy anything else.
Got ultegra and the cheap shimano ones, both work great.
Just decide how much you want to spend.
Thanks all!
I've had M520 and XT spds and couldn't tell the difference. Sounds like road pedals are similar!
I guess I'll just look for the optimum bling/price balance depending on who has what on offer....
