Hi all

Are the DT swiss g1800's worth an upgrade over some oem WTB rims on Shimano hubs ?

I can find them for 230 ish a pair brand new but whilst I can find the 1700s and the 1900s on their website I can't find the 1800's - is there a reason why these wheels are cheap ?

These ones? https://www.dtswiss.com/en/wheels/wheels-road/gravel/g-1800-spline

If the ones you are looking at have the star ratchet hub then they are a good buy. The 3 pawl version is cheaper so check. 1800g is pretty good as wtb tend to be over 2kg. I like DT swiss rims alot.

Saw those, pretty sure they're the old 3-pawl versions.

They can be converted to ratchet LN though, DT do a kit.

I can only see the rear in Sports Pursuit and it does look to be the 3 pawl system. You can upgrade that, but it negates any saving. That's a terrible site to navigate.

Thanks @hatter - do you know the part number of the kit or the description so I can track it down ?

@quentyn - you need a special tool to make the change too. It would be worth asking a bike shop how much they'd charge to source and fit.

FWIW I've used the 3-pawl DT hubs and hate them for the slow pick-up (and I'd not consider myself too fussy about these things normally)

The kit is around £70-120 plus the cost of two tools (£10-15 ea if you buy non official ones), higher price would get the 36t ratchet version. I only bothered upgrading one of mine as

  1. I had spare ratchets + springs
  2. I had one of the tools and the grease already
  3. The freehub body was dirt cheap in the CRC bin out.
  4. I needed a different freehub on my daughters 3pawl hubs anyway.

That made the cost more like £30-40 so equivalent to buying  the freehub needed for daughters bike.

I got the 3 pawl ones 2yrs ago when Merlin were flogging them off, they been through 2 winters and 1000’s of wet shitty road miles and a fair few unavoidable shallow potholes without issue.

FWIW I've had MTB wheels with their 3-pawl hub and they've been more than tolerable.

And I do more crank ratcheting on the MTB than gravel bike, I think.

The DT three-pawl system was a perfectly serviceable entry level hub, nothing inherently wrong with it and unlike most hubs at that end of the market you could easily get spares for them.

The slower engagement meant a chunkier mechanism with bigger teeth which tends to offer better long term reliability when neglected compared to faster engaging systems with shallower teeth, all other things being equal. Swings and roundabouts in other words.

Thanks @hatter – do you know the part number of the kit or the description so I can track it down ?

The kit to convert an old G1800 to Ratchet LN would be   HBDTLNKIT07 in XDR and HBDTLNKIT08 in Shimano HG 110-speed road.

You will need both a pawl and the ratchet ring nut tools though so, as mentioned above it may be a shop job.

Hmm I have just asked sport pursuit to cancel and I will just go hope (which is what I should have done from the start)

I will call my local bike shop when sport pursuit confirm cancellation and order the hope gravel wheels - more expensive but then I can colour coordinate the hubs 🙂

Thanks all for your help - I thought I had gotten a really good deal 🙂
