Got a cheapy DT M1900 front wheel just arrived. Was expecting rim tape installed or in the kit (as advertised), but there is none. Just exposed spoke holes. There is a tubeless valve in the kit though, along with the hub and centrelock adapters etc.
In the manual that comes with it, it has a section for "Using a tubeless rim with tubeless tyres" and it says "Ensure that no rim tape is mounted".
Is this right?
With no tape the spoke holes are exposed. Are the spokes sealed? Also if I put sealant in there, that's going to go down in the holes surely?
The instructions for tubeless rim with tube says to install rim tape. Though there's also a bit for traditional rim which says likewise.
Is the M1900 what DT consider a traditional rim then? Says tubeless ready here (and picture has rim tape on) https://www.dtswiss.com/Wheels/MTB-Wheels/M-1900-Spline-27-en
Confused. I'd suspect an earlier model but date on rim sticker is 2016 and the logos match the 2016 pictures.
I have the E1900 wheels, they came on the last bike I bought.
They were supposed to come with tape installed, but one didn't. I already had some in the garage fortunately.
Just add some tape and install the valve, they work well tubeless.
What they haven't explained clearly is the difference between normal rim tape and tubeless rim tape.
But you definitely need to use tubeless rim tape to run tubeless on that rim.
Yeah, that's what I'd expect. Cheers.
Definitely no tape installed as in the pictures and no tape provided.
Instructions are misleading. Or maybe by tubeless rim they refer to a full UST rim (do DT do these?) and a tubeless ready is "traditional" and uses tubeless tape.
Anyway, no tape but I can ghetto it. The stuff I use will work out slightly thicker than their tape I guess but should work.
a tubeless ready is "traditional" and uses tubeless tape.
Yes
They do need tubeless tape. It's supplied with the wheels when you buy them as a pair, not singly. (Don't ask me why!)
I think their reference to rim tape is to ensure tha people don't fit normal cloth rim tape and then try to fit tubeless tape over the top of that.
Thanks. Confusion solved 😀
Taped mine with 1" Gorilla Tape (handy roll) - works a treat. Pull tight when applying. 🙂
Yep, pretty much that. No brand B&Q alternative but does the same job. Used it a few times before successfully.
All fine and sealed up now.
Though I've already decided I hate centrelock. Or at least centrelock adapters. Needs outside BB tool (though think this applies to front wheel lock rings for 15mm or bigger hubs regardless of adapter or proper CL disc).
Got a couple of those tools. One won't fit, the other is a fancy Park Tools one but the lock ring is slim and difficult to get a grip on it. Couldn't keep it on level enough using a torque wrench to verify the massive 40Nm torque without it slipping and rounding off the adapter. Just went as tight as could.
Which leads me to my concern which is mid ride it slacks off perhaps - what do I do, carry a BB tool and wrench with me? !
At least with 6 bolt I carry a spare bolt or two and an allen key or t25, and only needs 9Nm per bolt.
