Having much joy planning my Sherpa build (hoping I might get the frame next month!). It’s coming with 35 mm SIDs, and just ordered 12-speed XT. Frame and forks will take up to 2.4” 29er tyres. Looking at DT on Hope 4s. I’m 72 kg so was going to go with the XR391 rim as a way to keep weight down (anything Nino rides is harder that my days in the Yorkshire Days 😆). However just crossed my mind that I will want the option of using it for some bikepacking, and wondered if the 391 rims were a good idea for that? Otherwise it’s ~200 g more for a wheelset and go with the XM421?
PT cycles can do either. I’ve never used them before but some past threads on here suggests they are ok.
No idea on the actual rims mentioned, the build quality will have more effect. When bikepacking you are only adding a few kg to your weight plus you tend not to be hammering down technical stuff in the same way as you would unloaded.
I have one on the rear on a dt 240 (28h). No issues with it whatsoever, including a couple of loaded rides in the Lakes. I'm 'about' the same weight as you. 25mm will be about the right width for 2.4 or less.
I've never really considered it would be a problem. As Bob says, one of the goals of bikepacking is to reduce weight in the kit wherever possible. That has all sorts of benefits.
For fully loaded touring, with lots of kit, it might be more of an issue.
Can’t tell you about bike packing, but I’m 90kg these days and run Pro4 on 391 rims with D-light spokes. They’ve been spot on with 2.35 tyres and never needed touching despite me being a bit clumsy at times, they’re certainly not flexy fliers.
Thanks all. Super helpful and some good points that you tend to not batter your way down stuff in the same way. In fact I have said if I’m ever seen in Lairig an Laoigh with a bike again, I have given permission to shoot me 😂

Fair point @scotroutes but currently holds no appeal at all. Light is the way forward.
