Looking at the EX511s for a 29er AM/Enduro wheel build and they seem to fit the bill.
Anything else similar out there worth looking at? Or even any deals on boost/29 wheel sets around £500ish?
I went through the same thought process a few months back. Had £500 to spend (ideally less) and wanted a 29" boost wheelset to cope with all sorts of riding although not so much wheels in the air.
Main thing for me was they needed to be strong to cope with my 110Kg rattling down trails.
After much deliberation and research, I ended up with EX511 on Hope hubs from a reasonable well known good wheel builder. (just as important)
30mm wide rims and 2.3" tyres as that's the largest my frame will take, and so far the riding is great.
I have 511's and have had 471's too. I would say that 471's are stronger, so if you don't want 2.6 or WT tyres then I'd go for them.
I was planning on running WT tyres as the frame will take a 2.5 and with the 511s being 30mm internal fancied giving them a go. I keep looking at DT 350 hubs instead of Pro4s too.
I was looking at the LB RM29C07 carbon rim and reckon I could have a pair of those built onto Pro4s or 350s for around £650 and save over half a pound in weight, but, I ride a lot of rocky stuff and I'm not convinced about carbon rims yet.
I have 511s on hope Pro4s running widetrail tyres. DHR 2.5 on the front and DHF 2.4 on the back. They have been bomb proof and those tyres come up fine on the rims.
Not sure if it’s the 1st gen WTs or the wheels or a combo but they are quite heavy. The front was 5lb without a rotor. Which was heavier than the rear!
Thanks Alex. The only thing putting me off the WTs at the moment is the weight. 5lb is a fair chunk!
Out of interest, can you desticker the 511s?
Running ex511s on hope pro 4s. If anything I would ditch the pro 4s for dt350 hubs as I don’t like the delay in pick up on the hopes. Dt make a ratchet upgrade to improve it. Rims have taken a shed load of abuse and not even flinched.
Mate is also running the rims and has de-stickered them and got some stealth decals made up
Cheers, noticed the ratchet upgrade on the 350s. Is it worth doing on the standard DT 18t hubs coming from Pro4s?
Haven’t the pro4’s got a quicker pickup than the dt’s even With the 36t ratchet upgrade? Hopes are 48 points aren’t they?
Pro 4s have fast pickup yeah.
I would choose them over 350s personally.
My pro 4s have a noticeable 1/4 turn or something before they engage, my mates 350s with the upgrade are nearly instant. Not sure why or how but riding one then other there is a noticeable difference
Not sure if they're still available but I got a pair of E1650 DT Swiss wheels recently which are EX511 rims of 350 hubs for £160 for the pair.
Put a 36 or 54T ratchet in and you'd have a fantastic set for less than £250 😊

Come on Steve, tell the class!
@chakaping I'm on (was on) Pro4s but fancy a change, I have a 27.5 wheelset built up on them but they're non boost and new frame is boost. I was going to reuse my non boost Pro4s with boost adaptors with fresh rims/spokes but decided against it.
@joebristol Pro4s are 44t, that's why I was interested to hear if some thought the 18t 350 was quicker. I'm not looking for supersonic engagement but something reasonable for ratcheting up techy climbs. Tbh I've always found the Hopes good for that.
Bluearsedfly- it’s interesting. I’m curious because I’ve just ordered xm481 DT Swiss rims and still pondering hubs. I started quite a big thread on rims, then hubs then spokes! With hubs I’m still wavering between pro4’s and 350’s. Leaning towards pro4’s at the moment.

CRC & Wiggle had them (one had the front, the other had the rear) and I used the £10 off new customer then some good cashback too.
Rear was on for £105 so got that for £95
Front was on for £76 so got that for £66
Got about £4.50 in cashback too 🙂
Seem to have gone again 🙁
Thanks Alex. The only thing putting me off the WTs at the moment is the weight. 5lb is a fair chunk!
I don't know if the first gen WT's are a lot heavier. The 29 ones I have on my RipMo didn't seen as heavy and they were bigger! The total weight was 9.5lbs for the pair. I didn't try and de-sticker them so not sure if you can.
Not tried them myself, but based on the review that was on the main site, I'd be very tempted to try the Hunt wheels, they seem like extraordinary value.
Stan's Flow rims are ony 1mm narrower than the Ex511s also, I've found them very good.
