Daft question but I've tried to pull my end cap off my rear wheel With the cassette still on the freehub

On 240s rear hubs do you have to remove the cassette before the end cap comes off??

I can pull the whole freehub body off Inc cassette with the end cap still on

I even tried to remove end cap with the whole freehub off but somethings telling me I should stop and ask the question before I break something 😂😂

I’d imagine that the lock ring would stop the end cap coming off completely.

I tried to do the same taking the XD cassette off a DT Swiss freehub and it all came off. Thought it worked the same as our Pro 2s and Pro 4s. Managed to put it back together and the cassette came off without removing the end cap. The end cap has a lip/flange on it to stop it pulling through if that makes sense. Pic shows what I mean

Tracey - cheers so to confirm you cannot get the end cap off with the cassette still attached?? That's how I'm reading it right? I've yanked hard at it and some thing wasn't making sense as you say it's how we always do hopes take the end cap off first then the cassette

Duncan - I understand that whole thing comes off together but I want to get the cassette off the free hub too but cannot remove the end cap at the moment hoping its just because the cassette has to be removed first

I couldn't because the lip on the end cap is bigger than the hole at the end off the cassette. The Hope ones don't have a flange on the end cap. Pics link may show it better

The Hope ones get fatter as they go in which is why it needs to be removed first to allow the cassette tool to go in all the way

*From memory* I took the end cap off my 240/XD driver to fit the cassette as my cassette tool wouldn’t engage with the cassette properly.

It took a proper good wriggle with some plastic jawed pipe pliers to liberate my end cap.

If you want to get the cassette off the freehub the end cap is irrelevant.

You need a splined cassette tool and a chain whip/alternative... the presence of the end cap doesn't change that..

Sure some much older cassette tools have thicker walls and won't fit over an end cap but most recent ones will.

I haven't found one that fits over a 15mm front end cap with internal centerlock though.

Great cheers guys appreciated

Yep I kinda thought when i had them that I took the end cap off before cassette but clearly not as Tracey says the lip doesn't allow it to pass thro the cassette luckily I stopped when I did as I think my pliers were getting very stressed and would have ended up breaking/gouging into the end cap lol

It makes sense now that cassette needs to come off first 🙂
