New rim time, which may be a Ex 511 if there is stock (29er). Aware they come with alloy nipples but I'd want brass. Do you have to use the Squorx style/do they bring anything to the build?

Stock seems to be thin online so may go for the Spank Spike instead.

For that rim try Starbike - they were by far the cheapest place to get DT rims when I bought my XM481’s late last year.

Squorx are nice to build with using the squorx driver, but I think you can use the pro ones (non-squorx) - they need to have the rounded profile on them to sit nicely with the phr washers you use with the Ex / Xm rims.

I was told the squorx nipples have some kind of thread locker in them that even though they’re alloy you shouldn’t have a drama with them seizing. I looked into brass and decided I couldn’t be bothered with sorting out the correct nipples so used the alloy ones that came with the rims.

I soaked the nipples in a light chain lube before building them and then used copious amounts of waterproof grease when assembling them with the phr washers - helped hold the washers onto the nipples when assembling too.

You can use the regular ones, I have, but there's also brass ones available:

Silver - N0BH20150N0500 Black - N0BH20150S0500

Squorx versions

Silver - NPBH20150N0500 Black - NPBH20150S0500

Squorx are pro-lock too. They are nicer to build with if you have the right tools, and stronger too... if you need that. But of course they do weigh a bit more.

If you don't have the right tools, a disc rotor torx bolt fits the head of the nipple.
I made a tool by making the head slightly smaller to fit into the spoke hole and screwed it into a bit of aluminium bar.

Not all squorx are proloc.
I have a box of black brass ones that aren't.
Afaik you don't need to build with squorx but you should use the phr washers.
I just rebuilt a stans rimmed wheel with an xm401. Erd same so just reused the brass nips with greased phr's as I didn't have any other 1.8mm nipples to hand.
The silver prolog squorx nipples are great. You should have no problems, even dts classic fr wheels use alloy nips

Sorry you're right - I see my confusion causing issue there - I meant 'Squorx and pro-lock too'

There's also regular brass non-squorx Pro Head ones in many flavours available.

Don't think they need to be squorx specifically, though the ones I built recently came with non-prolock ones (a bonus in my eyes) which were nice to build with. One downside that I hadn't even considered before though, they have a far more sharp and pointy head than normal nipples, and when you chop through a spoke with your chain, it's more than capable of puncturing a layer of Gorilla Tape, leaving you with a jizz filled wheel and flat tyre to sort as well (not my bike, or handywork btw).

Revisiting this although for the XR331.

Any UK suppliers of the pro-head nipples in brass, 14mm? SJS have Squorx at £35 as a back-up but would rather avoid the specific tool (aware bodges for building are available!)
