Hi,

i wondered if anyone might have any suggestions why my chain is coming off occasionally on descents please. I’m running SRAM GX Eagle which has done about 15 rides. Chain coming off caused a broken mech and ridden once since then, chain came off again just once. So mech is new, hanger was slightly bent after broken mech but has been straightened, front chainring should not be worn and looks fine, chain is 0.5 so doesn’t need replacing. Gears generally changing fine. Chain comes off maybe every five descents or so, normally on rockier terrain at speed.

Anyone think of any possible causes? Ideas much appreciated.

Cheers

I'd be thinking.... clutch in rear mech? Chainring worn? Chain correct length?

Of those, from personal experience, i' d look at fitting a different chainring if you have one?  My old Hope Retainer ring still looked "Ok"  but started to drop the chain. Fitted new ring, problem solved.

Cheers, that makes sense. Just reluctant to put a new chainring on so soon. I guess that’s better than breaking another mech.

Thanks

If the chainring was new with the group I’d replace your straightened hanger first.  Eagle is reputed for needing the back end perfect due to loading and I’ve heard of brand new hangers being not perfect enough or too flexy and causing problems.

I second what Vince has said, i went through 2 eagle mechs in 2 rides on a brand new bike. Shop straightened hanger which has sorted it out, been running spot on since.

Cheers chaps. I got a good mechanic at the local shop to look at it and he’s certain the hanger and chainring are fine. Think i’m gonna ride it again and hope I was just unlucky with the chain coming off last ride. May regret it.

Appreciate your help.

I'm not using GX Eagle so don't  have any direct experience of it, but there's been a few forum posts on here regarding various "issues" with it.    Tbh the chain shouldn't drop at all with that setup, it's what it's designed to do. If you've checked everything, and it's all Ok, I don't see what else you can do except ride it and see if it happens again.

leaving the bike in a lower gear helps as the lower chain run is long and heavy and bounces around,

if thats not an option for you a chainguide pref with a lower roller/slider, I dont notice 150g extra on the BB and no more dropped chains spoiling my fun 🙂

Ridden tonight and no dropped chain - cracking ride as well. As I said though it doesn’t happen on every descent so it might still happen next time. Not out of the woods yet.

i’m considering a chain guide but really don’t want to put one on, as downhillfast says the set up is built not to drop chains.
