I've managed to get my dropper (Brand X external) stuck in my 456 frame. I could do with getting it out. Any cunning suggestions? Usually I'd try brute force first, but if I can do it without borking the seatpost that would be ideal. I'm going to stick some Coke in there, see if that loosens it up any I think.
I am currently in the exact same situation Reverb in a Last Fast Forward frame.
I have had a delivery of a can of plusgas today and will be trying that tonight as google has shown good results with this stuff.
Has anyone tried this?

The only problem I can see with this is the potential to damage the internals of my dropper post through twisting it, unless I can somehow get it clamped below the telescopic part.
depending on how long its been in there. anything over a year and your into a world of pain. Id seriously consider scrapping the post.
Plus gas but soak it every day for a week or so before trying.
Then move onto plumbers freeze spray. A can of that through the bottle cage holes up in the seattube and spray upwards, will contract the aluminium post and steel frame and different rates and with some force you should twist the post out without damage to anything.
It's way less than a year, I only built the bike up around last October if I remember rightly. Possibly even later than that. I'll give the Plus Gas a try, I'd sooner avoid putting silly forces through it as I'd like to keep the post alive - it's probably worth more than the frame, ironically.
I've never had a seized post before, but then I've always kept my bikes in the house - this one is now living in my parents outhouse, which might explain it.
Any suggestions for preventative maintenance if I do manage to get it out?
just grease the post moderately.
Grease the post. Move it every ride or so to make sure it isn't binding
Ace, will do. Pretty sure I used carbon paste this time, but maybe I was in a rush and forgot...
The Seatpost Man will get it out. It'll cost about the same as a 456 and dropper though.
Yeah if it was my Rocket frame I'd be tempted by something like that (maybe) but with a cheap old frame and dropper not so much... I like the frame, but not THAT much!
There's a youtube channel called "Project farm" who tested penetrating oils and brake fluid came out best. Obviously not the nicest to work with and doesn't want leaving on too long. I've used it on motorbike engine/swingarm and centre stand bolts.
i wouldn't recommend using grease on a carbon frame though.
why wouldnt you recommend using grease? or is it just because it slips?
Have you tried leaving by the QR/seat bolt undone, and then going for a ride?
The one time, many moons ago, that I had a stuck post this was suggested and it worked a treat. It had loosened within a mile or so. Your bum and thighs put a lot of rotational and vertical force into a post.
Similar problem recently. Steel frame, alloy dropper.
Coke
Vinegar
Heat
Penetrating Oil
Haven't shifted it one millimeter.
Looks like a new bike so winner winner.....
What is everyone doing to get their posts stuck...or maybe not doing. I have never had an issue in 20 years. Even with my newer bikes with droppers.....I don't touch them for about 8 months and they just come straight out. I do use carbon grip (even in my ali frame) - maybe that's the secret??
I dunno, I've never had it before and I'm pretty sure I carbon pasted this one.
Could you clamp a nice long bar / screwdriver in where the seat goes and twist it ?
having done the same with a 456 and a HiLo dropper, I can confirm that using a stilson wrench on the dropper is likely to remove it dead.
Id already tried coke, pen oil, heat.
Penetrating oil then ride as normal unclamped.
Plus gas and hair dryer, remove bottom bracket and fill the seat tube, leave over night and gently warm.
So penetrating oil worked pretty quickly - guess it wasn't super stuck (which it shouldn't have been after only a few months, really).
So we're recommending grease before I reinstall? I've used grease on a alu frame / alu post before, and had a lot of slippage. I've always used carbon paste since, is that a better option?
