Finally decided that a dropper post wouldn't be a bad idea.

Will I trash the post or frame if I use a shim to fit a 27.2mm post into a 31.6mm frame?

Current frame is a 31.6 and future plans include a 27.2 frame.

Non stealth, and not planning on anything super expensive yet.

No, that's normal. The first dropper posts (GravityDropper) only came in 27.2 and were supplied with a shim to match the frame. A lot of XC bikes used to come from the factory with 27.2 seatposts and a shim to save a few grams. Just make sure you get a shim that's at least 100 mm long and that it extends below the top tube junction with the seat tube.

Cheers, I did think I was just being a bit overly cautious.

As said, nothing fancy to start with (finances somewhat extended for the longterm..{-(... ).  and a non stealth too, as there's no guarantee that the frame I might get will be stealth, and I'm rather reluctant to make holes in things that weren't there to start with.
