Is there a preferred / recommended amount of space that should be considered between the bottom of a cable operated dropper and where the cable comes out of the internal lug on the seat tube?
Looking to buy a oneup dropper that is internally routed and with the dropper slammed it looks like there will be about 10-12mm between the bottom and where the cable comes out of the frame, would this measurement cause the cable to have too much of a bend?
Mmm, lots of things that'll affect it like the angle the cable goes through the frame. Also remember that there'll be a cable ferrule to take into account, that basically uses up a lot of your space as it's straight and inflexible. Though you can find short ones or probably cut down a normal one.
The Oneup V2.1 actuator might give you some issues as well- it's generally better than the V1 but it doesn't really secure the cable ferrule at all, so if there's a lot of side angle it could easily get pulled out of its seat. Usually cable ferrules sit in a deep seat so the small amount of slack won't let it fall out, like on gears, but because the Oneup is engineered for shortness it doesn't have that so you lose the safety net (happened a bunch of times to me when I was installing it, quite annoying, but fine once fitted... But your fitment might make it worse) But then, it's offset to one side so you can rotate it to change that angle.
(The v2 with its moving cable housing isn't necessarily any better for this, because of the lack of space- it does retain the cable end better but the movements are a wee bit more complicated, if the cable is flexed a lot I can easily see that being a problem like some people found with santa cruz)
I suppose worst case scenario with Oneup is that you pop the 10mm travel reducers in it and use that to give you back height at the bottom. Shame to do it (my poor 210mm is down to 190mm, the shame) but if it's the difference between fits and doesn't it's a small price.
@northwind Thankyou for the reply! Certainly a few things to consider
I’m looking at the 180 drop oneup (current seat post set at 220mm, collar to rails with 280mm from top of seat tube to the top of the internal routing lug) looking at the measurements on the one up website I won’t have to have the post slammed anyway, maybe 10 or so mm up above the top of my seat tube top so it should give me a little more clearance down the bottom anyway, just thought I’d ask as a just in case...
Have found somewhere that accepts returns/exchanges in the event of any issues so always have that as a backup if all else fails
No worries- sounds like you're on the right track. It's always a bit of a mystery til you actually stick it in the frame tbh.
