Despite tightening down to 9nm my Hope calipers drift slightly over time and need re-centering, I've tried all kinds of washers, Hope 0.25 shim under washer but calipers still don't stay put, I meticulously centre them and make sure the pads retract evenly and keep my rotors as straight as possible but over time I'll hear my rotor scrub, look down and see its slightly off-centre again. Considering drilling and tapping little grub screws like those new Hayes brakes. I think cnc surface instead of forged/cast is the issue, maybe they should shot peen that section.
if they are drifting something is pushing them over. so you have a dodgy caliper or your mounts out.
Long shot, the bolts aren’t too long are they? So they bottom out on the mount before holding the brake?
Looking at it logically if each time you use the brake it automatically centres the caliper then how can if drift? One of the pistons mustn’t be moving properly for it to`want to move the caliper.
I’ve had 2 sets of Hope E4’s for 4 years now and never had a problem until my trip to the Alps last week. Each day, the lever would go soft and after some investigation it seems that the calliper is moving Over to one side causing the pads to touch the disc at different times. Re aligning sorted it out, but it kept happening. I too think it’s a lazy piston and in the Alps, the force in the brakes was massive and moved the calliper. When I get round to rebuilding the bike from the bike bag I’ll clean and lube the pistons with the hope it rectifies the problem. Just don’t try and tighten the calliper bolts any further or your next thread will be a ‘how to helicoil a fork’.
Cheers chris36860, good to have a response from an E4 owner, we're only talking a fraction of a millimetre after 2 or 3 months of hard braking and stoppies, but they're definitely being pushed over to one side, I've ordered some thick 14mm washers to try out.
And no P20, the bolts are correct, thanks anyway.
