I woke up in the middle of the night as I wrenched a muscle in my back as I turned over, it absolutely kills. I've dug out a blister pack of some diclofenac tablets I was prescribed as painkillers for a separate condition last year, but I can't remember what the correct dosage was. I only took one 50mg tablet at 8:30 this morning after taking some paracetamol about 7am. I had a couple of ibuprofen at 11. It still bloody hurts.
I know I can safely 'mix' ibuprofen and paracetamol, but what about the diclofenac? When and how much more can i take? Internet search results were crap.

EDIT: NO MTFU PRESCRIPTIONS PLEASE. Due to go on a group ride tonight.

Dont take diclofenac with ibuprofen!!!

I think the upper limit is about 50mg 4 times daily from personal experience - I think my wife take 25mg three times daily.

http://www.merck.com/mmpe/lexicomp/diclofenac.html

Oral:

Analgesia:

Immediate release tablet: Starting dose: 50 mg 3 times/day (maximum dose: 150 mg/day); may administer 100 mg loading dose, followed by 50 mg every 8 hours (maximum dose day 1: 200 mg/day; maximum dose day 2 and thereafter: 150 mg/day)

diclofenac always takes about 24 hours to take effect on me

and don't mix NSAIDs like diclofenac and ibuprofen

personally and on the (unofficial) recommendation of my doctor i take 100mg first dose then 50mg 3 times a day

combine with co-codamol or paracetomol but NOT at the same time as this reduces the effectiveness

paracetamol and diclofenac should be fine. not sure of the dosages tho. Lower the better i imagine

Taking NSAIDS together has an accumulative effect therefore can become 'toxic' - both Diclofenac and Ibuprofen are NSAIDS unlike Paracetamol or codeine. 🙂

thanks for that, so I'll wait 4 hours after taking the ibuprofen and then have another diclofenac

I love STW 🙂

I would wait 8 hours after the ibuprofen TBH but take some codeine and paracetamol in the meantime myself 🙂

i'd be less cautious, you can't buy any drugs over the counter that require such a low level of over usage to cause problems*. I'mn not a doctor mind, just spend a lot of time taking pain killers

that said, i've made myself ill with diclofenac, cocodamol, alcohol and extreme pain

not a winning combination unless you enjoy talking to god on the giant telephone whilst clenching your sphincter for dear life

*although some people will just react, a single asprin could kill you, or probably give you cancer, ask the Daily Mail for clarification

for reliable info you'll be wanting a pharmacist not a quack 🙂

🙄

Too high a dose of NSAIDS will lead to gastric ulceration - in high doses (not above) can also lead to renal failure. I'm always careful myself and I am mediacally trained 😯

wait and take more anti inflammatorys later, stick with a purer painkiller for now.

note:
the 50mg Diclofenac tabs are better than the 75mg SR (slow release) IMO.
should still remain under 150mg/24hrs whatever version you have

+1 SOOBalias - Purer painkiller meaning co-codamol not a NSAID (which are anti-inflammatories) 🙂

agreed but you're talking packets of the stuff, Ibuprofen for instance is available in twice the strength sold in the UK in other countries over the counter.

I take diclofenac with misoprostol to help prevent what you are referring too as i'm a long term 'user' 🙂

OP here again.

Ok, I'll take a couple of para's (not cocodamol it sends me loopy) now and give it a bit longer (this evening) before I go with the diclofenac again. When I was taking the diclofenac for more than a couple of weeks it wrecked my stomach, felt like I had a live hamster in there, so will probably only do today and tomorrow on it, by then things should hopefully have eased off.

Wussed out of ride tonight, don't think I'd enjoy it anyway 🙁

hmm why not go and see your GP and get a fresh prescription rather than second guessing?

Bit of a waste of everyones time if his back has gone already before. If the symptoms are the same and as long as it gets better now worse I'd just take the painkillers and see. I expect the GP will just give you a repeat prescription. Also He could always have a telephone consult witht eh doc to check if its not getting better?

If you need to see the patient information leaflet (or the Doctor's info, the Specific Product Characteristics) you can get them for all UK licenced products on www.medicines.org.uk.

The ones for Diclofenac are at http://www.medicines.org.uk/EMC/searchresults.aspx?term=diclofenac&searchtype=QuickSearch
