[Closed] Downtube dent? Will I die?

My Intense Tracer 2 suffered impact damage today on its downtube.

I now turn to the collective for opinions on whether or not the damage is terminal. It's located on the bottom of the downtube, approx 60mm forward from the bottom bracket weld. 5mm deep at its deepest. The helicopter tape makes it look more dramatic than it is in the linked pic. No cracking visible.

Will I risk catastrophic failure if I keep riding it? Or should I just keep a good eye on it for cracking?

Help please, as I still have a few days riding here possible.

The crease would worry me.

Mmm, I would be tempted to ride it until it starts creaking......creaking lets you know a cracks developed I suppose or as a safery wrap several layers of duct tape round it so even if it does snap it will still be held together of sorts.

I'd be too paranoid to ride that.

It might last a while, it might die next ride. I tend to go for the worst case scenario....

I'd ride that & not worry about it.

I'd ride it, its a battle scar to be proud of!

My bike has got a similar but slightly smaller ding in the same location and I discovered a few weeks ago a big dent on the chainstay, presumably from a chainsuck incident before it went singlespeed.

Well, you can take some solace from the fact that it was worth very little beforehand owing to its incorrect wheel size. Of course it's now utterly worthless to sell, so you may as well keep it. It might be a bit weaker in that spot, and it might snap there, although it'll almost certainly give some warning before it does. I would ride that without fear. Forget about it.

I suppose or as a safery wrap several layers of duct tape round it so even if it does snap it will still be held together of sorts.

<Insert that "can't tell if serious" meme picture here>

Consensus strongly in the keep riding camp. That I shall do. Also very impressed wrong wheelsize already got a mention. Thanks everyone for the input.

Intense also impressively replied (within an hour) to my email and said keep riding, but keep an eye on it.

I'd ride that but inspect it regularly.

Hmm - what about getting one of those small dent removal kits that you get for cars?

Car bodies are usually steel. That's alloy and it doesn't take well to being worked cold (I think). Pushing the dent out would make it worse.

Down tubes are under tension, wouldn't bother me in the slightest, bung a sticker on it and it's sorted.

+1 for duct tape as a backup. But I'd be checking it before and after every ride.

I have two frames with downtime dents. It really is fine.

NB - I have no idea what I am talking about and if you do die I take no responsibility for anything at all - but you probably won't so keep going.

Bike frames are deliberately dented on the insides of the chainstays to make space for the wheels. As long as the dent is smooth and even, it won't matter.

My Intense Uzzi VP has a few dents like that in the same area. The only problems it's caused is that no-one wants to buy the bugger. It's been ridden hard since and has given not a moment's cause for concern.

The ultimate solution to the problem, if you ride in areas full of loose rock is to ride steel frames. My Rocket and my BFe have some paint chips round there - that's it. Every ally frame I've had has ended up looking beaten to crap.

I have 2 huge dents- way bigger than the photos above - on the downtube of my Liteville - been there over 18 months - it'll be fine 🙂

Yes unless you're slamming into a tree forks first, otherwise you couldn't make a bike with a wire for a downtube like that one eh?

Only need a new sticker in a matching colour. And some means of distracting your imagination - try whistling?

...slamming into a tree forks first

I was thinking more of downhill and a few holes or maybe a long flight of steps with a lip on the risers. Possibly (I'm no expert) concentrated nearer to the headtube though
