Downgrading SRAM Transmission...

A friend just picked up a "bargain" bike for his 13yr old daughter, which just happens to have a full SRAM GX Transmission! 🤷

Anyway, he's naturally wary of potential expensive repairs should said daughter stack the bike or drop it on the drive side. So he wants to swap out the shifter and derailleur for cheaper, non-electronic parts.

The shop have also supplied a different derailleur hanger so it doesn't need to UDH.

The bike includes a flat top chain and the salesperson mentioned the chain ring is "Transmission" spec.

There are two approaches:

(a) Replace just derailleur and shifter (and add in cables)

(b) Strip everything off and replace all groupset components (eg with Deore 1x12).

The wrinkle with (b) is the rear hub has an XD free hub.

So, anyone know of any resources which detail interchangeability between components?

Eg could he use existing SRAM 1275 cassette with a Deore mech and shifter? Should the existing crank also work? Does a flat top chain also need to be replaced?

Or would it be easier to swap to mechanical GX (or NX) mech and shifter only?

Note: his daughter almost certainly won't notice less than stellar shifting quality or speed, so purists don't need to

get too upset with less than optimal setups 😉

Sound like a candidate for the new mechanical transmission by SRAM. T70 and T90.

Chain and cassette need to stay together. Mech and cassette can be anything. Chainring in theory is T type only but you'll probably get away with it. It's because the chain roller on Transmission is a lightly larger diameter.

Any UDH hanger will allow you to fit any drive components you want

I’d try and pickup a T70 mech and shifter (cheapest mechanical transmission drivetrain). Selling your electric Transmission mech and shifter should cover the cost with some to spare you’d think. Looks like about £150 for the mechanical t70 stuff you need.

Otherwise you’ll potentially have to sort out a new cassette and freehub, new chain and maybe a new chainring as well.
