Keen to go DoubleDown on rear, but not many 29er options. DHR2 2.4 would be ideal, but only comes in MaxxGrip which is probably a bit much out back for pedalling. That leaves the 2.3 DHR2 (on 30mm rims?) or the High Roller 2.4.

OCD means it has to be Maxxis, and the Aggressor is ruled out as it's no good at anything.

WWSTWD?

Can get a 2.3 DHR2 DD in MaxxTerra?

I’ve run one on the back racing and it’s been fine, bit skinny for the front but good on the back.

Is it the 2.3" or 2.5" Aggressor you didn't get on with? Like most Maxxis, I hear they're very different tyres.

Had both 2.3 and 2.5 aggressor in 27.5 DD. Just found them a bit meh, braking traction poor, rolling much the same as a DHR2. Not sure what they're for, really.

Yeah, was considering the 2.3, Hob Nob. Think I might give it a shot, will probably be better at most things than the HR2

I'm running a DD Griffin on the big bike and its been very good in the harder conditions we've had lately.
Only 2.3" but been great on my EX511 rims.

Currently running a 29 x 2.3 DHR2 dd maxxterra on the rear, so far so good but its probably overkill if used around trail centres. Think I got it fro m Tredz and fairly sure it was under £40

I'm running
2.5 WT EXO+ MaxTerra Assegai up front
2.5WT DD Maxterra high roller rear
Pertty happy with that for NE Scotland good compromise for rolling resistance and grip in the dubs. Highroller was bought at CRC a few weeks back to replace Rear torn EXO+ assegai.

Ive run a 27.5 DHR2 in 2.4WT Maxx Terra with Double Down casing before

Great tyre, good grip, strong sidewall, was the perfect tyre for me

Moved on to 29er wheels and wanted to get one and found the same problem as you

Ended up getting an Assegai with dual ply downhill casing and Maxx grip compound

Have been pleasantly surprised by it, lots of grip, wear is pretty good and the weight of the downhill casing isn't an issue

The sidewall has some serious marks on it but its still intact

With the weight and drag of a DH casing Maxx Grip Assegai on the front of my bike at the moment, the thought of one on the back brings me out in a pre ride sweat.

Yeah, have an Exo Assegai up front, no plans to double up on that

I tried a double down DHR2 2.4 in 3c on the back for a bit after pinch flatting a Specalized eliminator at the rim and writing the eliminator off on the first ride on it.

The dhr2 drained the life out of my legs unbelievably quickly. I won’t be using 3c on the back by choice again!

If it was a 29er, then that tyre only comes in 3c MaxxGrip, so not surprised it was slow uphill. 3c MaxxTerra is fine out back.

The 3C bit is fine, all their decent tyres use that tech, it just relates to different compounds for different parts of the tread.

The softness of the main part & description (Maxx Grip, Maxx Terra, etc) is the bit that determines how sticky it is. Maxx Grip on anything but a DH bike on the back is tough going.

If Maxxis made 2 different versions of the DHR2, my life would be amazingly simple, i'd have one set of tyres for life 🙂

Maxxis Assclown 2.5wt dh casing up front my god that doesn't half flick some stuff up and a Dissector on the rear, much better than the aggressor to be fair fast and loads of grip

2.3 DHR2 is such a brilliant tyre - it’s not that much shorter of grip than the 2.4 but it rolls so much faster. If the lack of volume worries you then stick a Rimpact foam insert in but with the DD version you probably won’t need it.

I'd agree with that except I find the profile isn't so great in a 30mm rim.

I have a Double down Minnion SS, which I didn't realise was DD when I bought it and overkill. If you're interested PM me.

Another vote for the 2.3 Maxxis DD 3C DHRII 29" here. Running on a 30mm ID rim and it's a great mix of grip, speed and strength. IMO of course.

Had a Dissector 2.4 exo on the back for 4 weeks, it had an early bath after ripping the bead. Found I had to run a lot more pressure in it compared the the DHR, casing felt a lot flimsier. Would give one a go in Exo+/Double down next time.

What I really want is a 2.5 wide tyre with a DHR2/DHF side lug and something like a Larsen/rekon centre tread.

Off on a tangent, does anyone else find the 3C Maxxterra compound not to have been too durable?

I've had a Shorty, a Tomahawk and a HR2 all wear much quicker than I'd usually expect.

Minion DHFs have been fine though.

Also, the quick wearing tyres do seem to grip very well, so I suspect some are coming out softer than intended?

Shorty's wear quick on harder ground, IMO, as soon as the trails start drying, off the shorty comes on back on the minion.

Had an Exo+ 3C DHR2 that felt softer than its Exo counterpart. The high rollers seem to wear quicker too, not sure if its the tread pattern or the softness, 27.5x2.5 wears super quick.

If you find maxxis 3c wears quick, dont even look at scwhobble!!!

You're not far off the Minion SS at that point.

Wish they made a WT minion ss for trail riding.

I'm finding Schwalbe wear variable as well, some last ages and some wear quick. Other riders I've spoke to have noted the same and I've seen comments on here suggesting there may a lot of variablity in the softness of the "soft" addix ones.

Find the minion SS has a pretty narrow window, something with a slightly more aggressive centre tread would be perfect.

I'd like a DoubleDown Dissector myself, think it's a really good tyre but same as you, I split one

I find the Aggressor DD a great tyre that rolls well.

I’d like a DoubleDown Dissector myself

I'd probably pony up for one of these, if they did them in dual compound so I could be confident they'd last more than a couple of months.

Minion DHF out back actually works OK, probably better than a highroller and less drag. You can get a 2.5 WT DD Maxx Terra option. DHR would be better of course.....if anyone from MAxxis reads this sort it out!

They do the Dissector in dual compound already. Seems to be some sort of mental block at Maxxis around making their rear tyres in heavier casings though

Dissector is available in DD across the pond already, presumable just a matter of time now (although they've done a folding DH casing 2.5" WT Minion SS for a couple of years now and still no sign so maybe not!)

Lord knows the thought processes that go into their production schedule and deciding on inventory.

We just want about five or six of their tyres in two or three compounds and two or three carcasses. It shouldn't be hard, but their eyes seem to get bigger than their belly.

A slight thread revival, but I was looking on the maxxis site today and it seems they are listing a double down 29 x 2.4 maxterra DHR2 now, can't find it anywhere on sale but it must be coming.

https://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-470-140-minion-dhr-ii

They also seem to have added an exo+ maxx grip assegai too.

https://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-568-140-assegai

Those 2 could make a good combo!

Good spot.... will snap that up when it appears.

Can see the Dissector is available in DD now also, albeit MaxxGrip

Just to add I’m running a 2.3 Dhr2 in 3c Max terra (albeit exo rather than DD) on the back of my trail bike on a 30mm internal rim and it seems fine. A 2.3 aggressor also fits on it although that one can be more of a challenge to pop into the wide rim.
