Want a double quilt for bike packing holidays this summer. We will use it on top of thermaerests sewn together with a zip.
In an ideal world I would buy the PHD double quilt...but it's over £400 which seems utterly absurd.
Cumulus make one which is 160cm wide as opposed to the 200cm wide PHD one. Has anyone tried one of these and what did they think?
Finally does anyone have any better ideas?
Aye. Avoid a double quilt. 😊
Biggest problem is that a gap can develop between your heads/shoulders, allowing warm air out and cold air in.
Pair of alpkit cloud covers?
Was going to say - Alpkit Clould Covers will popper together. Also can be used on their own etc.
Much as I like PHD stuff, their quilts aren't exactly camping oriented.
Cumulus will do custom stuff if you ask directly, quite a few get their single person quilts lengthened or widened, there's no indication of this on their website though. Just looking - the only double I see on their site is this: http://sleepingbags-cumulus.eu/uk/categories/sleeping-systems/comforter-xl700?gid=54&vid=7 which is 210cm wide.
Some of the US manufacturers do double quilts - for example: the Enlightened Equipment Accomplice but by the time you've added shipping and potential import duty and VAT you'll be over £400 again.
Maybe look at the UK custom suppliers like UK Hammocks (not sure if they are still going).
Finally, I'm with Colin on this. I'd avoid going this route, two individual quilts are more versatile than a double.
I'd suggest avoiding this like the plague if you'd like to continue in a happy relationship... The Scandinavian's have got this right when it comes to individual duvets on a double bed!
rather than adding a zip to the thermarest why don't you use a double fitted sheet to hold them in the right place? once you're lying on it the whole thing will hold together. Also I'd agree with the other posts, just use two singles because they will pack into two small bags which give more packing options.
The sleeping set up we use when cycle touring is a double duvet cover, sewn down the middle and sides trimmed to be a snug fit for two matching airmats (decathlons discontinued version of the alpkit Numo). Over this we use an Ikea single duvet and cover. Works well for us and easily fits into a 13l pannier with space to play with.
A duvet feels a little bit more civilised when used for multiple nights. Used this set up for 2*2 week cycle tours and a few weekend ones too.
Cheers for the ideas. The alpkit cloud covers don't look great to me - not great fill power or quality.
Didn't see the cumulus XL 700. Looks like it might be a goer for us.
Cheers for there suggestions on the mats etc.
Whitestone - why do you say that about the PHD quilts? I have little experience of quilts, but used many of PHD's jackets over the years. Be interested to know.
Just a quick update - ordered a cumulus quilt.
Ordered a custom L500 quilt at 170cm wide which is 30cm wider than the usual one. That makes it the same width as a normal double bed which seems like plenty considering the sleeping bit of out tent is only 120cm ish! The L700XL just seemed like too much being 2m in width.
Interesting timing. PHD have got as sale on. Just ordered myself a lovely 210cm long duvet from them ( sorry, refuse to call it s quilt though it is)
Send your order back and buy a PHD
@Joe - the PHD quilts are closer to a home duvet you'd have on your bed, what Americans would call a comforter, rather than a camping quilt similar to those made by Cumulus or companies like Enlightened Equipment in the States.
I've nothing against PHD - I've a sleeping bag and three of their jackets and if I were in the market for an expedition weight bag I'd be there like a shot with card at the ready - it's just that their "quilts" don't hit the spot.
We've also got a Cumulus 150 and a 350 quilt so feet in both camps as it were. Cumulus kit is pretty good, not quite PHD quality but not far off.
Hi Whitestone can you try and explain again. All you've said is that the PhD ones are like a home duvet or comforter and not like a camping quilt....
Whaddaya mean
Size?
Colour?
Fill weight?
Season rating
Smell?
Packability (clearly not)
Anyway. Please elaborate. I'm confused.
Style.
A camping or bike/backpacking quilt is an open backed sleeping bag for want of a better description. The idea being that there's no insulation to compress.
Look at the difference between a Cumulus quilt - http://sleepingbags-cumulus.eu/uk/categories/sleeping-systems/quilt-250-475151?gid=53&vid=7 and their comforter - http://sleepingbags-cumulus.eu/uk/categories/sleeping-systems/comforter-m400?gid=54&vid=7 You might need to click on some of the smaller images. The quilt's opening is down the back whereas the comforter's is to the side so it still has insulation "under" you. PHD's are the latter.
In part it's the use of the word "quilt" to describe two different things but then "duvet" can mean a jacket or a bed cover. Ho hum.
Instant divorce for us if I suggested a single quilt! We have two duvets on the bed at home
The PHD is still a shit ton of dosh. Will report back on the custom Cumulus in 4-6 weeks!
