[Closed] Double and bash, is there really any point in having a chain guide?

As above really, is there much point? Im probably going to be changing from my tripple to a double, but cant really see why i need a device. I've never had problems with just using the mech on other bikes. All the chain devices look really heavy as well.

what are your experiences?

don't forget to correct your chain length after, i eventually added a SLX double front mech which seems to help prevent chain from falling off on real bumpy stuff (hardtail) as shorter

I use a blackspire stinger with a double and bash. Stops the chain falling off on the really lumpy stuff and doesn't weigh/cost much. Having said that, I'd be fine most of the time without one.

I run two bikes double and bash - never had a need for a chain device

I don't see the point in a double, despite doing the same riding as many that do.

Rad-core fashion!

I'm not really sure if will be my cup of tea either, but i would be happy for the mahority of my rides on this bike with just a 36 tooth ring. SO having a 22 tooth will just be a bonus...

Never felt the need for one myself. Give it a go without first.

For example, I just spent three days riding in the Lakes and my chain only fell off once.

If you're using a Shimano plastic bashring though, that will probably fall off more than your chain!

Drove me nuts out here until I finally got a chain device at the end of last season. Recommended!

To be fair - recommended if you're riding the Alps on a daily basis. Chain never comes off at places like Glentress, Golspie, Laggan, etc when I'm back in the UK.

Been running double/bash for a year now and not dropped the chain once and that includes a week of constant rocky abuse in Verbier. Running an E-13 Supercharger for use with up to 36t rings though with a 32t ring so maybe helps?

Would never go back to a triple now - I'd have demolished an outer ring on my ride on Saturday if I'd been running one...

On the Soul I just run the 2 rings, no bash, no chain device. SLX double mech but I used to use an XT triple. Almost never drops the chain- it does it sometimes when I'm off the bike, for some reason, but I can only think of one time it's ever happened on the move since I sorted out the adjustments and fixed the chainlength.

"I don't see the point in a double, despite doing the same riding as many that do."

With a 36 tooth double setup you lose only the 2 highest gears on the big ring, most people won't miss that.

I never used to have one, and seldom had any problems, however added one after trying to pedal into one of the jumps at the bottom of the Cwm Carn DH track and finding I had no chain!

(Have Truvativ Shift w/ 36/24 rings)

Blackspire stinger here as well. Not had too many problems with the chain dropping off so it's more of a belts and braces approach for me.
