You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hello, off up to Dolgellau at the end of the month for a family break with the inlaws. Staying in town for a week and I should be able to squeeze some riding in.
I reckon I should be able to get a few 2-3 hour... maybe 4 hr... rides in.
So I'm thinking about options.
Browsing the heat map there look to be quite a few off piste options dropping off the climachx route.
Anyone got any info what they are like and whether they ride ok in the wet? (I am expecting it to be wet!)
Also thinking of other local options...any others I am missing:
CYB. Done the beast loads but I always enjoy it.
Cadair Idris. Never done all the way to the top. Rode off the pony path a few years back which was 'ok'.
Don't fancy Dyfi bike park... Especially if it's wet. Don't think I would have enough time to make it worthwhile really??
Pont scethin I've done and it was ok.

Fast and slatey, not too muddy (maybe a couple are) but a lot of puddles IIRC. Trailforks is good for navigating here.
CyB is still amazing in the wet, grippy with no mud and hardly any puddles.
There's other off-piste around Dyfi too, not tried it myself.
Cadair is definitely worth riding.
Thanks @chakaping
With it being slate, what are the grip levels like in the wet on the Climachx off piste?
We were up at grizedale in the lakes recently exploring the off piste. Also slate. Ground was soaking and it was very slippery and treacherous. Too slippery to be that much fun TBH.

Fine generally, was there a couple of weeks ago in the soaking wet and had no issues.
If it's your first time I'd say just pick up the "sanctioned" off-piste trails - Elephants (take the left line part way down for a something a bit more involved), Builth, Dickos (might be 2-in-1 on strava), and then finish on the climach-x main descent - tony the tiger. Pretty good intro to the Dyfi IMO.
There's loads in the dyfi forest.
Enduro trails over the Aberangell side.
Have a look at old Dyfi enduro routes - they include some of the best descents (slatey bedrock/loose) linked together with fireroads. Routes can be extended shortened quite easily.
I agree, was over there last week. Wet but still grippy
Nice one, thanks all. Doesnt sound too terrifying 🙂
Sounds ace - might need to pencil in a Dolgellau based trip. Cracking place to be based too for a few days too...
We did part of a day riding the Climachx but with a load of off piste bits. I was fine with wild enduro front - Magi-X / Conti Xynotal soft enduro rear. Plenty of grip on the slate bits. Not much mud really. Was very wet that day.
I sliced the rear tyre on Tony the Tiger - 2cm in the sidewall so written off really. So probably don’t ride it with exo casing tyres.
Had a really good time up to that point - a lot of the climbs are fireroad (which I’m prefer to some tech fest Singletrack climb) and the descents are fun. Some are loose slate so moves about a bit under the tyres.
My mate had a tired dhf on the front (maxterra) / DHR2 rear and he said it was frightening how little grip he had - especially when turning across the slate. So just make sure you have decent tyres on.
There is meant to be a load of tech on the other side of the Forest but we didn’t head that way due to lack of time.
We did ride Dyfi bike park the next day - I thought it was awesome - my mate said it was mildly terrifying. We rode mostly reds but with some of the single diamond blacks. I think it was ‘muddy berms’ that my mate had to get off and climb down with his bike 🤣
I’d say I’m only middling / intermediate in terms of riding and I thought Dyfi was great - if challenging.
Locals may correct me, but I think I remember some of the trails turning a bit stream-like in the wet?
So waterproof shorts/trews might be a good idea.
They can turn into streams, for sure. In the Dyfi you want cheap and burly tyres - very easy to slice them right open! take a spare in the car is my advice.
The Mach 4 loop is worth doing if you want some old-school XC riding.
Also, Cadair is a good day out but the summit conditions will be much worse than in Dolgellau so dress appropriately!
It poured with rain all day we were there but no drama with having to cycle down streams really
