On my Bullit I have a Cane Creek Double X headset, the Bullit is a straight 1.5 headtube, it had Boxxers on it with a straight 1 and 1/8th steerer, I've also got the bits for a 1.5 Double X too so it was a simple swap to fit my 1.5in straight steerer Totems, so I could easily change from one fork to another without having to remove headsets, just change the top cap. I'm selling the Bullit, I have a Nomad with a straight 1.5 headtube and it has tapered Lyriks on it at the moment but I'd like to be able to swap to the Totems when I go to the Alps.

Long story short, can't find the Cane Creek Double X for sale anymore, is there a similar headset that I can change from 1 and 1/8th to 1.5 just by changing the top cap ... make sense? Would hope do something like this??

Hope do a stepdown H/S

It fits a 1.5" headtube and the centre diameter allows you to fit regular 1-1/8th straight steerer forks ?
But youd have to change h/s to go back to 1.5" forks not just swap caps / unfit adapters .

Chris King do one. The top cup has an insert that is easily removed to step it down to 1 1/8th. Then the bottom is sorted out by using whatever size crown race (base plate) you need.
I'm sure Cane Creek do something similar too, maybe just not called the Double X. Have you tried the headset finder on their site?

Yeah, tried the headset finder, it only gave the option of having a 1 and 1/8th top part for the headset for the Nomad (thinking about it I might put in the Bullit and see what that comes up with) I've emailed them to see if they can advise, all the different types of headsets is just mind boggling!

I've got a spare 1.5in Double X complete headset, all I really need is the top part for a 1 and 1/8th steerer but can't find spares.

Maybe just change the top bearing for a 1.5in one when I put the Totems on for the Alps trip?

My headset came with two crownraces. One for 1.5, one for 1.1/8th.

Came on a giant reign, its an FSA of some sort.

im pretty sure the hope ones use the biggest bearings that fit in the headtube, and then the only races are different...

I don't see any reason why you could fit one on the crown and the other under the stem.
