Is there a bottom bracket spanner that will do both the normal and smaller (XT?) size of bottom bracket cups without having to use the plastic adapter? A sensible priced one too.

I've got a standard one, but most seem to come in the smaller size the last few years.

Yes - a quick Google throws up 4-in-1 options as well as this type which looks nifty. Abbey Bike Tools BB Socket for newer Shimano Dura Ace, Ultegra and 105 BB cups

Personally, i've got a couple of the old size spanner type ones as well as a new size socket one which I think does the shimano chainring from memory.

That tool doesn't fit the sensible price requirement! However it did make me look a bit deeper and realise there are THREE sizes now, which is madness. I'll have to do some measuring and find out which I need, probably easier just to get a second single ended spanner.
