with the tyre on it was visibly wobbling so to avoid it being the tyre i took it off and gave it a spin

is that buckled badly enough to take into a bike shop ? or should i just put the tyre back on in a different orientation and wait for it to get worse / be the same  ?

Possibly, lightly press your thumbnail against the edge of the rim whilst holding the fork, you should be able to feel any imperfections. It is within the limits of the British Standard for new bikes, which is something like +/-1mm of radial truth, but realistically for a new bike/wheel there should be no visible variation

thanks I have just put the tyre back on and its even worse than before. I reversed the orientation of the tyre ( as i had put it on different to the one at the back earlier)

this is definitely an issue ?

or is it my tyre ?

Doesn't look too bad, I'd probably have a go with a spoke wrench, make it much worse and then take it in to a shop

the rim alone looked OK to me but with the tyre on its well out - so I suspect the tyre is the issue not the rim

The video of the rim is fine, no issues there. You may have a out of tolerance tyre.

*Edit* jus watched the tyre video, have you checked the rim and tyre circumference are true, something is off. Make a small set up with a cable tie just touching the top of the tyre and spin it to check if the circumference is true.

Thank you everybody. I don't think it's the tire else. The tire has become out of true after I hit it against a rock... I did have an impact which is what's making me think it is actually the rim that's out of true rather than the tire itself. The tire was perfect before I did an impromptu 125k gravel ride

Rim looks fine. Tyre looks wobbly-as ...

Is it mounted correctly, ie is the moulded ridge just above the bead evenly spread all.the eat around the wheel?

The tyre is definitely more of a problem.

If it's mounted with an inner tube then make sure that the valve is pushed up inside the tyre beads before full inflation and

Thanks all

The tyre is tubeless - all was good until the fateful , accidental, gravel ride. I have ridden about 2k on this tyre

I will pop it off today, mount it the way it was on before and I will check that there isn't any gunk in the bead of the rim. Will also check that the rim is round in the z axis (from the orientation of the camera shot)

After that it's the bike shop I think

Have you got another tyre you can try? Swap the rear onto the front, that'd then rule in/out the tyre/wheel ...

No need for a bike shop (unless you go in to buy a new tyre).

Rim is fine - maybe >1mm out of true looking at the video.

Tyre is buggered <5mm out looking at the video. Tyre change time!

Thank you, I am currently sitting outside my local bike shop waiting for them to true it at the moment ! I put a zip tie on the fork to check the alignment and it is definitely out. But you're right, it's not out by a massive amount.

Regarding the tire being out of alignment. How on earth does this happen? It was absolutely perfect until I hit that rock on the gravel ride. The tire was only done 2,000 km and given that they are £80 each I'm hoping to avoid having to change it. How does a tire that was in alignment become out of alignment just due to me hitting a rock?

So far today I have taken the tire off, cleaned out the gutter in the rim. I cleaned the tire and the bead. And I retaped the rim with slightly narrower rim tape so that there's no rim tape at all in the gutter of the rim. It's better but it's still out

The Kevlar strands in the bead can get damaged or pulled tight/loose due to an impact.

I've heard it said that you may be able to massage or pull them back into place, but I've tried in the past either no luck.

I've had a Maxxis tyre come new out of true - luckily was able to swap it. Also killed a Vittoria tyre due to an impact, it had about a 15mm wobble after hitting a waterbar at speed.

Thank you ! I have ordered a new one ! That's £64 I won't see again - need to be more careful next time. Lbs managed to get it to within 0.2mm to 0.1 mm (or was it 0.02 to 0.01mm?) out of true before they stated it was as good as it was going to get 🙂 excellent service from Northwood cycles !
