my fox RP23 is squelching, have been told its probably cavitation. If i leave it will it do long term damage? Seems to still ride ok at the moment, just trying to avoid £100 service cost.
Thanks
Nope, it just means the damping oil is mixing with air in the damper. It may impair damping performance, but shouldnt do any physical damage.
Worth getting it sorted in the meadium term though.
Cavitation it's self shouldn't cause any damage at the early stages, however as it get worse (you have a leak so more gas will get in the oil) the performance of the shock of the shock will get more unpredictable as it heats and cools, so the rebound, for example may get really quick, which is less than ideal.
Also if the shock it bottoming out it's more likely to cause damage to itself and /or cause other issues that may cause other seals to fail.
In the long run it may work out cheaper to get it service in the near future rather than let it fail totally and potentially leave you with a larger bill. (full service and return postage is only £82 at the moment too )
I've just had mine done by LOCO, there's usualy something already damaged to be causing the cavitation (as seal has to have gone, or in my case the shaft bushing too loose) so something is already a 'problem'.
And seems silly riding round on £k's of bike and added weight if you've not got it working properly may as well (or better) be on a hardtail or supermarket special.
