What about a dropper post? Surely every bike ever in the world has to have one now, otherwise it's as outdated as a Penny Farthing......

Fail, no 35mm bar/stem, no 1x11.

Frame material? If it's Alu, that's another fail.

Must try harder.

Wide handlebar - check

if it's not 10mm wider than the widest bar ever reviewed on an MBR review, then they'd call it legacy and narrow.
Must be running at about 850mm wide now to be acceptable?

My wide 730mm bar is already hipster fixer narrow.

How do you think I feel with my 640mm bars?! That was wide XC when I got them...

In fact, never mind my bike passing the 2014 test, I'm not sure it'd even pass the 2004 test!

640 - blimey, that's almost like the chopped bars where you only need one side to fit a front brake lever.

bit like my previous bike - went out of my way to get the 64mm "all mountain" rockshox rather than the 50mm XC version. for use on tow paths, with the theory that one day it might get used on a rougher bridlepath. but then I moved to Holland.

Ha ha. Some awesome replies. I forgot to put dropper post on the list but it's ally frame and no 1 x 11 so definitely fails the 2014 test anyway.

Looks like I need to try again next year 😀

Nah, it's not a touring bike that you insist on referring to as a a Cyclocrosser.

650b - no (26")
Tapered steerer - no, 1.125"
1 x 10 - no, 3 x 9 (I know,m I'm SO retro!)
Clutch mech - a what? (no, it's an M952 XTR)
12 x 142 rear axle - no, QR front & rear
Narrow/wide chainring - no
Wide handlebar - 640mm with a 25.8mm clamp
Tubeless - no
Expander sprocket - what?

To the above list I'm going to add:

BB - ISIS
Dual Control levers

Dropper post - no

Now I maintain that I'm just niche-retro-core but some may call me hopelessly out of touch with modern [s]MTBing[/s] Enduro Gnarr.

I have none of those things and seem to get across The Beacons without dying.

I meet ISIS and raise with 3x8 and 25.4 bars at nearly 600mm, front roadie QR and a Flite Alpes.

To be properly right you have to at least do the following

Replace the Shock with a CCDB with at least 15 knobs as it "Makes the Bike"
Replace the Shock with a CCDB with at least 15 knobs as it "Is disgusting that a bike comes without a decent shock"

Declare how your bike has the perfect geometry and how your amazed anyone could ride anything without that geometry.
12 months later fit anglsets/offset bushing and declare how your bike has the perfect geometry and how your amazed anyone could ride anything without that geometry.

Get a light trail bike and overbuild it to cope with 1 week in the alps and an uplift at BPW or buy a burly AM bike and spend loads trying to get it to weigh the same as the lightweight trail bike does off the peg.

Missed any?

650b - no, but by swapping the drop outs the frame will run 650b
Tapered steerer - check
Wide bars - 780mm so check
Short stem - only 50mm, so XC lengths to many
Dropper post - check
1x10 - check, but I've run a single ring for yonks
Narrow wide ring - check
Clutch mech - yup, but it still clatters a bit
12x142mm rear axle - yup, but I'm still running old school 20mm up front
Tubeless - check
Range extender - no
Internal cable routing - no

Oh and it does have a CCDBa but the frame came with it.

It's black though but does have a few bits of colour to liven it up a tad.

Had to google Expander Sprocket - 40/42t sprocket to give you a wider spread of gears for people who went 1x10 as they couldn't afford 1x11.

That'll be me then, getting one fitted in a couple of weeks 🙂

Though my bike fails the 2014 test by being a 29" aluminium 12x135 2013 has been. It's so last year it only has a normal CCDBair, I can't go out in public anymore...

I'm a sheep, I'm a sheep. It's official. New build ticks all the boxes apart from 650b. I'm sticking with 20mm front axle and Revs rather than Pikes too, oh and it won't be carbon.
