Does it have to be new? Lots of bargin previous 'top of the range' 26" bikes seem to pop-up second hand.

Yes, new - this post is more out of finding the state of the market than actually buying one......

The state of the 26" new market has long been dead. No more to find out.

No.

Speedx have just released a carbon hardtail, but it's shit.

At the top-end of your desired suspension range, but it does seem to discount what kerley just said:

EDIT: Whoops. Spoke too soon. Just noticed you asked for full sus. 😳

I think Commencal have some odd sizes of Meta SLs left in their outlet. I really like mine.

What do you want it for tho?

I'm thinking of buying a 650 frame and building it up with my old 26er bits for the kids next bike. That kind of thing?

Nope, still swappable dropouts - 26 or 27.5, 12x142 or 12x148 boost (no QR or 12x135 now). Not exactly a 100-120mm bike though!

A second hand Specialized Camber or Yeti ASR-5 could be had for between £450-700.

New - nothing being made now I'm afraid.

I find it amazing that all mountain bikes were 26" and 3x for so long, and now there are none, apart from the buckshaw which has weird big tyres.

There is barely any perceptible difference between 2 and 650b, bizzarre.

Ah well I'm still rocking 26 and 3x9 here.

^ Me too... 🙂

Asking a question on STW is exactly like walking into a bike shop...

You say 'I'm interested in this - and I would like to know more about it'

And you get the response 'No, you don't want that, you actually need to know more about this alternative instead, why don't you try looking into something else'

As above - not really no. For all intents and purposes 275 is the same as 26 as you say OP, the bike indistry where just to embarrassed / manipulative to go back to 26

I have 2 26ers and if I get my arse in gear I'll building up another with a brand new 2012 Frame I have had in store for 4 years 😳

More the answers were the state of the market. That answer is really short and people were trying to be helpful, so yeah just about the same a good bike shop. Hey you can't get what you really want but lets see if there are some alternatives you didn't think about that would work for you...
(I do not own a tin foil hat and have not been to the Bike Indsutry secret summit in the volcano and there are denfinatly not white cats to stroke and after last year we had to get rid of the shark tank - allegedly)

26" was starting to be partially dropped when 29" came along and with option of offering new 650b size the remaining incentive to stay with 26" was finished off. While companies like to sell new products they don't want to be taking the risk and making bikes in 3 different wheel sizes which is why they have grasped the 650B as a happy medium wheel for most people.

he's hanging off the handholds horizontally by his feet.

If you look at all the background the picture canted at 90 degrees - hence is jacket hanging down on his right side.

plenty of people still are running 26, 3x9 in the real-world. right now its a great way for people to get a good deal on an older high end bike. the problem is, there aren't many slack ones for current tastes.

if i kill my frame i'd love to get a slack 26er frame. but ideally i'd like to able to afford a new bike before i kill off my current bike (car first, bike second) instead of doing a half measure.

but if i'm going for a new bike. i pretty much HAVE to go 650b or 29er. i'm not decided yet, two of my group are running new 29ers now. (one is a 3x9!:P) so i'll get a good chance to observe and ride one. i'd want a lightweight, short travel (100-120) full susser (single pivot prob).

I've still got my wifes xs Santa Cruz Juliana to build up, bought it in 2009.

If it wasn't bright gold, it would be great build for the lad.

That's proper slacking, that is.

You don't often get that level of procrastination these days. Outstanding.

Except when it comes to sharing wheels or tyres between bikes 😕

I don't think "the market" has ever dropped something so quickly before for no real good reason.

Even URT suspension bikes hung around for a good while and they were rubbish.

Not for what they were intended for they weren't.

Oh, and the 27.5 version of my old 26 bike felt closer to the 29 version and definitely different.

Having been on a 29 for a few years 26 feels weird. I won't be going back.

wwaswas... I keep getting the poor thing pregnant, (the wife, not the MTB) and she keeps reminding me too.
She's giving me a hard time now, and wants it built up.

Perversely I think it's probably a good thing. I'm not convinced 650b/27.5 was ever really a thing 'we' needed but now it's taken a foothold and not going away killing off the old standard that was closest to it is probably the right thing to do. Too many standards is a bad thing.

The way I see it.

Any argument that 650b is better than 26, must make 29 better still.

And any argument that 650b is better than 29 must make 26 better in that respect.

The classic compromise.

So reality is, if you only have room for one bike in your life, it probably should be a 650b 🙂

You should try some regardless of the wheel size and see what works for you. My 100mm 29r xc race bike has nothing in common with an enduro 29r.

just choose one and ride the thing. Does it really matter if in some scenarios a 29 would be better in others a wider tyre, in another more suspension, another less suspension etc,.

Easy for me to say as I only ever have one bike at a time and just concentrate on that one bike.

Not only does my road bike have a triple, both my MTB's are 26"!! They are both 1x10 but even that's trying to be out of date now as well......

I'm soooo behind the times i guess but i picked up a second hand 2011 cube stereo pro a year and a half ago for £500 and all it had done is sit on rollers in his garage and become a coat hook for his barbour jacket .3x10 and 26 rims are a bit yesterday looking around but it puts a smile on my face every time i go out and its paid for.I don't doubt its nice to have the latest thang but until it starts costing me money i will continue to ride it.Its a hobby and im no racer.I really believe there is to much pressure on people to keep up with the the fashion ,be it bikes or gadgets.
