Hi,

Does anyone own the full 1:25k OS Maps digital download?

https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/osgps-bundlegb-25k.html

If so, could you let me know if the files inside are sorted by region (by name, or perhaps in to folders) or is it one single 21gb file?

TIA

This is all of our most detailed mapping for GB in a single file

Yea I got that off the OS website already thanks, but the download may be a single .zip file which then contains the individual regions as folders or files, which is why I am asking if someone who actually owns the full UK map can confirm for me...

Presumably it doesn't really matter as it's designed for their own-brand GPS units, so assuming you have a big enough card and it fits in your OS GPS, it should be fine.

The way OS digital mapping works means that you get a variety of proprietary formats, so you get to buy the same data over and over again to use on different devices, this version looks like it'll only work on the OS's own GPS units unless they also offer some sort of desktop app that uses the same format? Sorry if I'm stating the obvious btw.

Ah - I see what you mean. The Garmin equivalent is split into 5 regional files but that could be a filesize handling issue with their hardware/software.

I'm looking at one of their Trail Bike GPS units, but the only way to get 1:25k mapping is using pretty expensive tile purchasing, that's £5 per tile according to the website. I think that's great for general use and infrequent trips away, but I'm quite often doing 50-100 mile rides in different places, so would like 1:25k for the whole country if possible. If the full 1:25k download was subdivided, then the regions could possibly be loaded to the device as needed by USB. The regions are available for purchase too but are £99 each, so the full UK option is quite a saving in the long run over buying individual regions or tiles.

Why wouldn't you just load all the files (assuming they are separate)? I'm not sure what advantage there would be in only loading those you required for each trip.

Presumably it's a single file, the two devices it's supported by (neither of which is the trail so size aside you may have format issues) both support sd cards and the download you linked does state it needs an sd card, (presumably due to the 16gb device memory.)

The downloads I have had from os in the past - not this - were a single file which recognises in "regions" for nav purposes within the software but is a single lump of data so can't be handled as separate regions for up/download as you describe. As I say not this file specifically though.

Regardless of size, format would be my bigger concern.

Given the trail bike is similar cost to the a ventura and both include 1 to 50k or the horizon is noticeably cheaper with no maps, I'm not sure why you'd want to risk buying the trail bike one then a dl you may not be able to use as opposed either just using the 50k or getting one of the similarly priced or cheaper units which is definitely compatible and then the download if you definitely want 25k instead/as well. You've your reasons I'm sure but seems odd.

It most likely just be map tiles, and their app will put it all together. You'll need their app to view them. I'd think it unlikely they'll be firing in files you can just open in photoshop.

I guess it's stating the obvious, but maybe the best option is to contact Ordnance Survey's support. I've always found OS difficult to deal with as an organisation - they seem to have done that thing of taking Government agency bureaucracy and imposed it on a complicated commercial process, but with nuts and bolts stuff like this, you'd hope they'd know what they were doing.

Do you absolutely need the 1:25,000 mapping btw? My experience with mapping GPS units is that 1:50k scale mapping is often enough unless you're threading through urban parts or farm buildings etc.

The download is specific to the OS own-brand GPS units, I think.

@dangeourbrain
Well I don't want ... yet, exploring the options to see what's possible. I had been looking at the Aventura, but then saw the Trail Bike which has a dedicated bike mount and excellent battery life too and is a bit cheaper than the Aventura ... but seems oddly limited by 1:25k map options otherwise it would have been perfect.

@BadlyWiredDog
That's a good question, I haven't ever used 1:50 to navigate, my leaning towards 1:25k only really comes from having always used that scale for researching & plotting routes, which are then loaded to a old Edge200 ... so probably 1:50 will be revelation compared to following a monochrome breadcrumb.

Assuming it's mainly for biking 1:50 would generally be my go to, 1:25 doesn't give a big enough field generally for me for that. That said I'll pick up the 1 to 25 of any "difficult" navigational bits along side.

25k is the go to for walking though.

Fwiw the horizon (no maps but 100 odd less) has a bike mount included, half the battery life at 10hr but that's removable unlike the trail bike unit. It's also got 3 years premium sub which, if it'll allow upload from there, gives full downloadable UK coverage in all os formats...

I had a very old OS 25k raster set, not that one. It came as a set of geotiff files.

Unless you're wedded the something particularly esoteric about the 25k product then for general purpose mapping look at Vectormap District, which is free.

Personal experience is that any map compiled from Openstreetmap data is at least as good as Ordnance Survey, and usually better.

If you have an Android phone then the paid version of back country navigator allows you to download os maps via bing. I've found this to an excellent supplement to the openstreetmap maps on a Garmin GPS
