Hi folks,
In the grand tradition of building a bike around a bargain part, I'm building around a 26" Fox fork. It has a 1"1/8 to 1.5" head tube, so the On-One Carbon 456 looks good. However reviews say it's a back-breaker frame, so it would be nice to have options.
All other frame makers seem wedded to 27.5 or 29 wheels. Sigh.
Any ideas?
Cheers, al.
A Cotic BFe?
There are a few around if you look for older stock, don't forget to look for things with 44mm headtubes too, not just tapered.
Or just use a 650B frame, it'll work fine, and depending on the fork/headset combo might not even be that different*
Will drop the BB slightly, but not by much, and might even be a good thing on some frames, have a look at some geo charts and do some comparison.
*ie: a2c length variation between manufacturers + headset cup heights etc. can often mean only 5-10mm difference in some combos. If you're looking at a hardtail frame then even less of an issue as people run different travel forks anyway.
Heh - exactly what I did with some Lyriks and a Commencal SX HT frame which they made in 26" flavour until last year.
I looked at the Carbon 456, Cotic BFe and Ragley Blue Pig but all s/h.
dartmoor hornet
Stanton Slackline? 44mm headtube 26" frame.
Thanks all,
27.5 is interesting, wider clearance too perhaps. So, another trawl through the the frame sites coming up!
Cheers, al.
Thank also for the tip re: 44mm head tube. Taking the 27.5 and 44mm tips together, leads me to the 45650B hitch is also nice'n'cheap 🙂
Bargain-tastic!
Yup… 44mm headtube does the job…

Mk3 Dialled Alpine has a 44mm headtube
I have a black 18" carbon 456 frame not doing anything... Just saying like...
The C456 (the original at least) is not a back breaker, in fact it's a fairly sorted frame (with some aesthetic issues).
I wanted a fat bike though, so it got stripped and stored.
Mine has a bit of a chainsuck scratch, but it works OK of you wanted something cheap to try.
Giants have had a 44mm head tube with an internal headset for years. I've heard that they can be run with a tapered steerer if you use an external bottom headset cup. Can anyone verify?

That should be fine. 44mm headtubes are pretty common. I'm on my third frame with that and all had tapered steerer forks fitted. Hope type H is an example of one that would work.
i ride a chameleon. if you believe all the talk about them being harsh i should have been split from end to end by now. it's all pish. maybe a bit more high frequency vibration, but that gets dealt with pretty quick by 2.4" of rubber at 30psi.
FWIW i'd had a succession of steel frames before that. bugger all difference in real terms.
