A friend of mine needs a set of clipless pedals and I've come up with the wonderful idea giving them my deore pedals and buying a set of XT or XTR fir my bike
Does anybody know where I might be able to get a good deal on a set of neither of these?
Be very wary of 'bargain' Shimano XT M8000 spds, there's an Aliexpress fake version.
Paul Milne cycles have got a set of XT M8100 for £70 at the minute.

Thanks for that
I see biketart have the xtr for £25 more - is there any advantage to going xtr apart from logo ?
Q
Boardman clipless used to be lighter and cheaper than XT if that's your thing.

about 30 grams lighter, and an extra years warranty. (Which is pretty much useless, as XTs will likely outlive you.)
I think there’s a seal issue that’s specific to the XTRs. People online seem to moan about seals migrating, no idea if it causes real world issues.
I’m looking as well. Will probably go XTR unless there’s a better deal on the XTs somewhere.
There's always some on FB market place where I live - quite a few try out clipless and last 1/2 a ride before deciding it's not for them and selling the pedals and shoes.

Any point going above Deore?
PD-m520 is all anyone really needs. But Shimano SPDs do last ages so the price difference can be spread across a decade + of use. I bought my XTRs in 2013 and only now have they died (and could be easily fixed with an axle kit).
Look for 540's, last for ever and nice/lighter than 520's.
according to R2-Bike.com M9100 XTR are 313g, XT M8100 are 340g, GRX M8100 are the same (no surprise) and M540 are 351g.
M540's can be had for about £45-50, XT's as above, £70, and XTR's are what, £95?
Both my bikes have M540's, that are between 10-15 years old, get the odd flush and re grease every couple of years and are showing no signs of giving up.
The M520's are about 375-380g, and can be had for under £30. They are still as bombproof as the M520's but you need the toothed tool to get them apart for servicing rather than a spanner.
Agree with 540s being the sweetspot.
I've just ordered these for an ebike though. Appear to be £70 in a few places at the min
I have the trail's on my FS, and standard XT's on two other bikes. Also got 520's on the CX. Only real difference is the XT's have a better axel locking nut and a nicer axel. The 540 comes with the XT style axel/locking nut.
I mainly use m540's but have one set of XTR's. In use they feel the same but the XTR's have slightly less depth.
Xtr also have the narrow q factor version of that's your thing.
The seal on my xtr needs pushing back in fairly frequently. Looking at xt for my xc bike instead.
Thank you all. I have ordered the XT versions
