So.. back wheel is gubbed, fired in a new freehub(it burst last week), but I've since discovered the bearing surface is gubbed, ah well, will need a new wheel/hub at some point. Anyhow, cleaned up, regreased etc, but I can only really get it back working freely with a little bit of play in the wheel(wee bit probley half mm tops at the rim), still pedals fine.
I'm aswell riding it till destruction anyhow, before I need to by a new yin.
How long before I/it dies?
It won't die..in fact I reckon you can ride it for a good few thousand miles.
The cones are cheap and easily replaceable, it won't help the bearing surface but might add some mileage?
Good idea, might try that, obviously one cup is brand new, one of the cones was pretty bad too actually, guessing might actually just get away with 3 new surfaces and 1 dodgy surface, least for a while longer. *fires off to the interweb*
You can press in a cup from another hub no problems

And if you're really keen, drill a hole for a grease port like the old bikes had, then it will last forever, just like well maintained old hubs did.
You know I'm an idiot. I'd actually forgot I'd replaced the freehub before on this bike, stole one off an old broken wheel last time, and I had to also steel the drive side cone as it was slightly different freehub. ie I bodged the heck out of it last time! 😆
Ended up just buying a new hub, realised the full hub isn't much more than a freewheel. took out the cones, and bearings stuck them in happy days, buttery smooth, no play again, the inside wasn't pitted on closer inspection, I'd just assumed that because it was overly rough! D'oh! Ah well, least I've got a spare free hub now. (plus the hub body, which I doubt I'll ever use.)
Glad it's sorted mate.👍
Dumb Q alert.....are the bearings in a carrier or loose?
I'm guessing they are loose, just curious really! Lol
Aye just loose bearings. Think all Shimano cup and cone are loose bearings. (Don't quote me on that!)
Caged bearings are the work of the devil! Always always use loose ones, bit of grease will hold them in place during assembly.
I have some mid 90’s XT hubs which need building into wheels again. Done lots of miles but still feel as good as (maybe better?) than new. Soooo smooth.
You can knock the cup out of Shimano hubs.
I've done this with a Deore that had worn cups, just bought a donor hub and stripped it down.
Another that's bought a whole hub to use as spares - same price as a freehub only.

That's you and cynical mentioned that now, cool, maybe the hub body I've got spare now will come in handy in the future then!
