Just about to start looking at wheelset options. As usual looking for the best weight/cost/performance combo.
And are BB7's the disc set to go for.
Oh and for the race cross bike.
XTR?
As long as you have a 135mm rear spaced frame which most are now.
trp hy rd disc brakes maybe and your usual mtb hubs, probably with some iron cross rims running some tubeless clement pdx.
$$$ - i dont have these btw 🙁
I do. Using A2Z hubs with BOR rims, C-Xrays and Spesh Terra Tubs.
Have switched from Avid brakes to TRP Spyres and I prefer them.
dobo, I like the Clement tubeless/tub idea as you can use sealant?
oldgit, according to some cross forums clemant will work tubeless with sealant, not tried them but michelin mud 2 definitely seal well on suitable rims, i am running them tubeless at the moment, they are not perfect on my narrow rims though.
I think there are better brakes coming through. Don't have the money so haven't looked but the BB7s are old tech. They work well enough though.
FWIW I'll tell you what I got and why.
I got Velocity A23 tubeless rims on 32h Hope pro2
Velocity tubeless were light and didn't have a breaking surface (aesthetics 🙂 ). Tubeless wasn't a requirement, don't use it, but they are ready.
32H - Heavy but I don't just race and can only afford one set of wheels. Did give stiff and (3pks) strong build.
Hope hubs because they are easily serviceable and parts readily available.
Justridingalong were very helpful. More choice these days. The stans cross rim looks a good choice. There are lighter hubs than hopes too. Still I was spending £300 on wheels I can't do that very often.
Not seen much in the way of factory kit. planet X have some carbon disc options. Superstar components do as well. Of course you can source your own bits and build.
In case anyone cares, don't use ice tech centre locks with bb7s (unless you want to angle grind bits of pad off to get the wheel to rotate!)
🙂
I have Stan's 3.30 disc hubs with Stan's alpha 340 rims. The iron cross look stronger for off road though.

The old XTR 975 rotors are the same. I just snip a bit off the little tab on the pad
I fitted HyRd's to my White CX last week, good power, great feel but lever travel a little long and I haven't found a a way of reducing it yet.
Having run hyrds for a few months I found the cable stretched. Do up the barrel adjust and nip up the slack.
For budget I've been on the novatec hubs(400 and something grams come with skewers, cheap from bike24), cartridge and fairly light for the pair.
Just bought some old hope xc's and going to pair them with Halo aerorage rims. Should be nice and light when built.

That doesn't solve the problem, the caliper lever has to return fully to open the reservoir and allow fluid to flow and make up for pad wear. If you adjust the cable the it prevents the lever from returning fully.
keep the lock on and pull the stretched cable through. Barrel adjust for a bit more tension. Seemed to work on the ultegra sti.
