I need a new pair of tyres for my CX bike (Kinesis Pro 6 with Stans Alpha rims). Due to a few factors I would like the following from my new tyres:

Can be run tubeless
Have extra puncture resistance
Fast rolling on road
Good on 'gravel' (canal towpaths/disused railway lines)
Wide
Grippy in mud (muddy bridleways)
Erm I'm sure there was something else but can't remember at present

I think the only real tyres that may fit my requirements are Schwalbe Marathon plus tours. Does anyone run these? How do you rate them?
Any other tyres you can think of?

Ta.

you don't want much do you.

grippy in mud and fast on road are mutually exclusive in my experience

He he I know.

I'm not going to be using them in gloopy slop so happy to lean more towards better rolling resistance than out n out grip

Im going to use them throughout summer, so unless we get endless rain between now and the end of September then I just want a tyre that can cope with any summer mud out on the trails

Marathon Mondials are the ones I am going for next.
Could maybe bodge them up for tubeless.
I think changing the pressures is going to be the compromise for grip ,and for the road these should go up to 90psi at a push.

Last year I found that Clement PDX had a good compromise between rolling, size, grip, dry, mud, etc etc. They're not supposed to be tubeless but I'm currently using XC LXV 29er tyres set up as tubeless quite successfully.

FWIW though, unless you're after a full on mud tyre for riding through thick slippy stuff, many 'summer' CX tyres actually grip surprisingly well in normal mud - by my reckoning the skinny tyres mean they cut through it to firmer ground below unlike mtb tyres which tend to float on top of it.

Marathon Tour Pluses are not going to be great in mud and are probably overkill in terms of puncture resistance if you're running them tubeless. They also weigh almost as much as a DH tyre (900g for 700x35).

The Schwalbe Landcruiser isn't bad for what you want- it has a solid centre strip that is fast on road and more aggressive side knobs that bite in mud. Or a Hurricane, which is less aggressive.

I have a set of Schwalbe CX Comps which I will be using once winter comes.

My mate swears by his WTB Nano Race 40c. If you can find some. Light, Grip and Rolls.

35s:

Racing Ralph
Can be run tubeless - yes, currently doing this
Have extra puncture resistance - possibly not so run them tubeless 🙂
Fast rolling on road - yes
Good on 'gravel' (canal towpaths/disused railway lines) - yes
Wide - 35mm
Grippy in mud (muddy bridleways) - Good in mud other than full on clag

Bonty CXR
Can be run tubeless - yes, though I found the sidewalls a little porous
Have extra puncture resistance - see above 🙂
Fast rolling on road - yes
Good on 'gravel' (canal towpaths/disused railway lines) - yes
Wide - 35mm
Grippy in mud (muddy bridleways) - Good in mud other than full on clag

Small Block 8
Can be run tubeless - yes
Have extra puncture resistance - you can guess this 🙂
Fast rolling on road - yes
Good on 'gravel' (canal towpaths/disused railway lines) - yes
Wide - 35mm
Grippy in mud (muddy bridleways) - Good in mud other than full on clag

Oh and ref tubeless, I was reminded again today which I run it. Two punctures today on my CX, one each wheel (glass on the cycle path by my reckoning). The rear one was pretty loud - ie a big hole. I stopped, shook the wheel around with the hole at the bottom. Strava says it lost me 25 seconds. The front one was a small one, I didn't even stop, sealed itself. Didn't notice any significant loss of pressure in either case.

Looking to change my Kenda Kwickers so watching this thread too.

Used to have SB8s on a previous CX bike and they were good in mud and most things, perhaps not the best road tyre. Going tubeless on whatever I put on, nipped a tube last time out. Difficult to find a comfort/anti nip pressure for the tyres.

I used to ride to work off road on road using land cruisers . Heavy as hell but seemed to grip and minimum punctures .

Might try a Conti Sport Contact 2 on the rear with a Conti CX Speed on the front. Not sure how well the Contact will hold up though, sidewall issues perhaps.

Has anyone used Panaracer gravel kings or Vittoria XN Pro?

run a slick on the back. surprisingly grippy and noticeably faster.

I like marathon racers. quite happy with them on the front in summer too: just not too much mud

Those are what I have on now. They aren't great in mud.

Land cruisers just ordered from next day tyres. If they're crap I'll blame you all, but especially Munrobiker 😡

They're great for puncture resistance. They're crap for fast rolling or being light...

Got WTB Nano race here - 40c.

Seem pretty good allround - quick on tarmac and pretty good in the mud as well.

puncture resistance comes from tubelessness...

WTB Nano 40c came with my bike, but I'm turning it into a comfy commuter bike for it's main role so I've ordered some 700/32 marathon plus tyres. They'll be fine on the road and most of the urban cycle tracks/paths nearby, they're don't really get muddy.

Wanted the puncture resistance above all else

Haven't got them yet though, commuted on the road with the WTB Nano's and they were fine, but won't be massively puncture resistant

No mention of the sammy slicks?
I like them for a non-race CX tyre. As mentioned unless it's a mud tyre you're going to struggle in mud.
Or Challenge Chicane XS 33 in open tubular flavour?

WTB Nano race here - 40c

So these are OK run tubeless? I was looking for the TCS version but couldn't find anywhere that actually sold them.

On One Gravel Road 120tpi. Brilliant tyres. Faster on road than Vittoria Randoneurs and far grippier off it.

So brilliant they've sold out it seems. Boo.
