Am currently making a romantic picture in my head that it would be nice to clock up some proper xc miles, on a dedicated xc bike, to make use of rubbish conditions by getting fitter.

Got a 26er hardtail, a charge blender, it's ok for bimbles, not overly efficient, a ball ache if im honest, but very capable in the peak rough.

So looking for something a lot more efficient, but still very capable, would your average "xc" 29er be a good way of going about this. I understand that 29ers feel very stable and confident, a 100mm 29er will feel more like a 130ish 26er, what's everyones experience of this?

I also do tend to enjoy doing bunny hops, manuals and general tom foolery on the way to stop the mind going numb, out of the question on an "xc" 29er?

All of the above are impossible on a 29er.
You might just get away with the tom foolery on one of them newfangled 650B's though.

OK, OK, smart arse, is frolicking on the way around on a xc 29er a pleasure or a chore?

for hardcore 29er tom foolery look at something like a canfield nimble 9 or yelli screamy stick a 100-140mm 29er fork in and get rid of the 26er hardtail as they will spank it.

For more general 29er-ist duties and going very fast but still having fun, anything like a singular swift, salsa el mariachi, niner SIR. all have great geometry work well with 100mm fork and ride brilliantly

29ers are crap, you need a road bike for rubbish conditions.

Both my bikes are 26" XC hardtails. Both have 100mm forks. They are as so different it's beyond belief. One is cozy and smooth for all day jaunts, the other is a vicious monster that wants me dead.

Changing to bigger wheels? I'm not convinced.

29ers are only for those not man enough for 26ers, the easy option as it were

neither are actual 29er riders, which is why we try and convince folks that the "wisdom" of singletrack is correct and they'll kill you as soon as try to turn a corner or ride anything more tech than a fire road.

We're a bloomin public service, we ride these death traps so you don't have to!!

My wheels exploded three times today.
Put all the other riders off even trying one.

They thanked me for the warning not bother with them.

Probably. I do. Try one at least, and give it a good old try not just a little spin.

I also do tend to enjoy doing bunny hops, manuals and general tom foolery on the way to stop the mind going numb, out of the question on an "xc" 29er?

Not out of the question but not as easy on a 26 because the wheels are heavier.
