I've noticed on recent rides, and it's entirely not a deliberate action, that when not in "attack mode" I am riding with my hands resting right at the end of the handlebars, so my palms are around the outside lock on collars with little and ring finger not gripping much.
It does feel comfy and in the absence of an equation to work out bar width based on reach/shoulder width etc, I wonder if my posture is trying to tell me something.
Unfortunately, I am using 711mm Easton havens, so terribly #unduro
I used to have 711mm eastons too, I didn't think they were not wide enough but I didn't like the sweep/rise angle. I'm now using spank spike vibrocore 800mm bars. I was going to cut them but I lke the 800mm for downhill and move my hands inwards when climbing.
what to do is loosen your grips and move them out and see how that feels (obviously don't actually go off road like that). once you have found a distance that feels comfy measure it. alternatively buy a wide bar and cut it
I tend to sit like that on my 780s...
I like the bars I have, there is no equation but I do think shoulder width plays a part but certainly no one size fits all. Had a go with something wider, what do your mates ride?
I remember when 710mm bars were considered wide 🙂
Might be worth having a look on the forums for a set of 750mm bars and trying them out before making up your mind?
I do the same on 800s. Not sure at what point I'd stop.
My usual riding buddy is about 4" taller than me and rides an xl frame so test riding is difficult!
I might try the loosening thing but wonder if it is a grip thing, not a span thing.
Chromag Cutlass carbon bars at 750mm are half price at Shorelines if you're considering going wider
Nice one Fudge9202 , just bought some. Nice colours on there too grey carbon, nice.
I've got Havens.
I tend to hit things on anything wider.
I'd like to go wider, but it gets to the point when previously ridable gates and bridges turn into a thrutchy gamble.
I'm narrow enough in shoulder that I sized my road bars down to 40cm from standard 42, but on the MTB Ive gone from 680 to 711 to 750. Got some of those Cutlass's on order - they'll go on my Alpine160 and it's Havocs will replace the OE 710mm bars on the Wazoo.
