I've got 2012 XT - I think M785 - and I'm going from triple to double (2 x 10).
Assuming I've got the "switch" in the shifter which I do need to check, do I need a new 2 x 10 front derailleur or not?

P.S. Any advice on how easily to spot if I have the correct shifter would be appreciated.
My only advice is that I didn't ever buy a 2-speed pacific mech. Just set the limit stops right.
Didn't buy a 2-speed shifter either, just didn't use the third..
Ok interesting, that'd be some cash saved.
I have 2013 version of same, the switch on the mech is all you need. I know this as mine is and always has been a double front ring but in an off the switch got bumped a bit and shifting went tripplieish. Much fettling showed that the switch is the main thing, as it limits cable movement. Do make sure you set inner screw correctly before attaching cable to mech
If you're using a double specific chainset rather than a converted triple, they're designed to shift from 2-3 rather than 1-2, so ideally you'd need the switchable shifter or you run the risk of dropping the cable nipple in the shifter if you hit 1st and the cable goes slack (ask any mechanic how much fun it is to remove a jammed up cable inside a shifter). As for the mech, a triple will work, a double will work better, and make sure it's the right type for either double specific or converted triple, as they have different cage profiles.
ok cheers. Sounds like it'd be best to get the double specific mech. I'll check my shifter and hopefully I already have the right one.
Why not try it and see? Rather than just drop £40 on a mech you may not need?
I altered my M785 XT triple chainset to a double and bash and kept the original triple front mech. I changed the shifter to 2X from 3X and altered the top limit screw on the mech.
It worked perfectly, no risk of over shifting onto the bash and no need to buy a double specific front mech.
Win win.
