Need one for tonight but all local bike shops will be shut by the time I finish work, do small Halfords stock them?

I'm sure they've got plenty for hybrid bikes up to ~40mm. That'll do for emergencies!

Do you 'need' one, or would a 26" tube stretched a wee bit, like what I used for years, do instead?

Or..............................look at their website? For 700c tubes?

I dunno.

I was thinking 26 might do in a get me home emergency, might just risk it then

I rode 26" tubes for 2 years without any issues at all. Just got to pre-stretch them before you pop them on.

Be careful if you're using a 2.1" or similar width tyre - I've had a couple of 40mm tubes go pop when inflated inside a 2.1" tyre. It just does it sometimes either when you are pumping it up, or a few minutes later when you're riding along. Much better to use a 26x2.1" tube and stretch it over the wheel, rather than a 700x40mm.

The last time I went to halfrauds for a tube theh had not got owt over a 2.1. A 29er would be completly alien to them.
