Had a pair of these since September. They've not had heavy use as I was on the hardtail most of the winter. Recently noticed they're a bit rattly and found both have play on the inside. One is worse than the other.
Considering sending them back to CRC as it seems far too soon for the bearings to have gone. Anyone else had similar issues with these?
Cheers
Sorry complete opposite for me.
I've had mine for 10 years.
Changed the bearings every other year. Not that they need changing, but I got a load of bearings for silly money.
I suspect the bearings would be classed as perishable so it might be tough luck via crc.
If the bearing size is the same I'll send you a couple to see if that helps?
Thanks holmes. It just seems a bit odd as they are so well reviewed and it seems rather soon for them to start to go. Plus I'm not heavy or an aggressive rider. My superstar nanos have zero play after much longer use.
I'll email the warranty team to see what their view is. I might take you up on your generous offer if i have no joy with them.
Must just be a bad set. I've had the old set on my hardtail for about 15yrs. They have had a tough life and are now living out their retirement in peace.
I've been using DMR V12s for years, as above change the bearings every other year or so. They do develop a bit of play but will continue to run for miles and miles before they start creaking under weight.
DezBJr's V12s are over 2 years old, used every day on his commute-to-school bike and still smooth as new.
mine always do this though they are 12 years old, good tip. Take the outside end cap off and fill the space with thick grease, put the end cap on and tighten back up with an allen key. This forces grease through the pedal asssembly. Dirty grease will push out from the crank end. Repeat until the grease that comes out is clean. I run 2 sets and on average this last about 1-2 years before they loosen, i think the grease fills the gaps. Never changed the bearings or bushes in either set.
Bearing or bushing?
Think they're similar to Vaults and one end is a bushing. They wear out as kind of designed (sacrificial to prevent more expensive bits getting destroyed).
With the Vaults I just pull them off, clean up and slap loads of grease in there then reassemble. Run okay for a while more, though play develops again over couple of months. Cheap DU bushings to replace (instead of very expensive DMR service kit). The end bearings I've never replaced. They always seem find.
Cheesy bushes??
I've the same experience with the v12s. Bearing still like new, but bushes knackered. Grease them up every 3 rides or the rattle gets on your nerves. Spares kit is £25, don't think you can buy the bushes separate. Unless someone knows the dimensions?
Thanks all. So it's a bearing on the outside and a bushing on the inside. They still spin smoothly so i expect the bearing is fine and it's worn bushings as neb described. I can live with the slight play and rattle for now, i just thought they'd be more durable given all the 5 star reviews.
deadkenny, where do you get the Vault bushings from?
DU1 4F - 12mm Ø ID (Internal Diameter) 14mm Ø OD (Over All Diameter) 10mm Width
From their spec:

Vault bushings are same. Not sure where I got them but probably a bearing place like simplybearings.
