Looking to get my next action camera and ideally want one for kayak, hiking and MTB - I’m looking at a DJI Pocket 2 I’m sure this one will be fine for both hiking and kayaking but how would it fair for MTB. Any users out there how it performs over agressive terrain
I've used one extensively, and now own a pocket 3.
They're simply not action cams in terms of being robust but they are better film making devices.
They clearly won't survive a good dunking although one of the pockets had a marine housing. Can't remember if 1 or 2.
That said I regularly take mine on the bike and get decent shots and you get a mechanical gimbal which is infinitely better performing than digital stabilisation which relays on plenty of light and fast shutter speed.
I'm a film maker and want my shutter speed set at 1/50 that is no issue for the Osmos in terms of stabilisation with ND filters attached.
It's my go to travel camera now because the image is so much better than any action cam - 1" new sensor, 10bit. Etc . I reckon it's better than my Xiaomi 13ultra 1" sensor phone.
Action still reigns for anything where you might drop it or get it wet.
The new DJI editing software light cut is incredible for travel work and works well with the Osmo and DJI action.
I've never broken a Osmo pocket though - and my day job in film productions means I get to use all sorts of stuff which end up on my travels.
Absolutely fine for hiking and some biking.
That’s a great reply thankyou!
Just to mention the pocket 3 seems a decent upgrade on the previous versions if you've not come across it. E.g. the sensor in the 3 is one inch whilst it's 1/1.7 in the previous versions - a one inch sensor will give better low light (most of the time in the UK!)
It's not an action cam tho. Don't think they're waterproof. I've just got a insta360 ace pro - pretty decent so far.
Yes the pocket 3 is a big leap in picture quality.
Everything is better; dynamic range , 10bit log picture. Control of sharpness and noise reduction.
Faster charging and a better screen.
The Pocket 1 and 2 were still a bit too small and basic. The 3 is close to a professional device in my opinion and the sensor is really really good. 120fps/4k too.
The Osmo Pocket 3 is good enough to do away with a mirrorless camera for travel video I reckon. (If you can cope with a fixed focal length.)
Stills - less so.
How would the pocket fair on a chest mount - would it be uncomfortable, Iv had action cameras in the past and I do like to ride POV but probably spend most of the time with it on the ground getting footage - I tend not to push the trails that hard these days 🤕 but would like the option to do POV
There are such mounts that go on straps.
See the website Scotty makes stuff. And I don't see why not, hopefully your body does a fair bit of damping in the process.
But then you're are moving into action cam territory perhaps with the possible shake.
I did try mounting directly to the bike once but there was too much shake and the gimbal doesn't overcome vibrations as such. So I wouldn't do that.
Comfort factor I don't know. Shouldn't be much of issue. With his devices you have to literally field test everything to find your sweet spot as there so many ways of doing things.
Ground based footage is much better in my opinion and more about film making - whereas POV footage doesn't really do it for me. And the Osmo pocket excels there - you can get it to track you too, by remotely setting up your phone before you set off past the camera.
I will try a chest mount at some point this year - just waiting for better weather.
The DJi action 4 is on offer at Amazon at the moment. With a big chunk off.

How are you getting on with that?
Are DJI and Insta 360 cameras good bits of kit?
Are GoPro no longer the go-to for action cameras etc?
I’ve had a DJI Mavic Mini for a few years and was just using it a couple of days ago, followed by looking around on the DJI website. They seem to cover pretty much all bases for cameras now and from my use of the Mavic, the software seems much better to use than on my old GoPro.
Are DJI and Insta 360 cameras good bits of kit?
I think DJI make excellent kit across all market segments.
I think with the DJI/GOPRO/Insta360 - they're all very similiar but DJI is pulling ahead in my opinion with quality and the editing software. One of my only frustrations wit DJI on the pro side is kit has to go back to Netherlands for repair - obviously post Brexit hassles but the service is very good.
GoPro - nothing really wrong with them but I would flop for DJI - certainly for my needs, and especailly with their app editing software -4K editing across wifi - still blowing my mind now.
I've got the Ronin 4D Cinema camera and it's so so good to work with.
Here is music video I shot about 90% with last year when starting out with it. I mean this is still a low budget video but we would have had to hired steadicam+operator before this camera came along.
