Hi all, I need to get this shock up to around 250 psi, after a quick look online it seems you need a shock pump but im not one quick to part with cash so I got the old air bed pump out and fashioned one up but its just not getting any air in, the sellotape is tight, any ideas ?

Buy a shock pump

You'll need to part with cash, unless your air bed takes 250psi and you have an elephant to push that pump.

Nice troll anyway, the e-bike is a nice touch.

This is a joke isn't it?

Are you sure you have the hose on the 'blow' port of the pump, not 'suck'?

What you need is one of them electric air bed pumps, that'll do the job no problem.

I once managed to inflate a shock by mouth, took some doing but got there in the end 👍

Try plugging the pump into the cigarette lighter on the bike.

Sellotape is where you went wrong, duct tape FTW.

Lose some weight, that way you won’t need to get to 250 psi

In case this is serious, that pump will struggle to get to 10psi never mind 250. You need narrow bore pump to get high pressures, that pump is very wide so will only do low pressures. And even if you had the strength to push it, it would burst cos it's only plastic.

the sellotape is tight, any ideas ?

You're clearly a weakling, not pushing hard enough. Do you even lift?

As alluded to above, sellotape is only rated to a low level of pressure, up to a max of 20 PSI IIRC. However, the use of duct tape may not cut it either as this was designed for low pressure air ducting applications which typically only operates in the 10-40 PSI range. What you really should be using is hydraulic hose repair tape. You can buy this at any good agricultural supplier and it is rated to around 500 PSI so should easily be up to the task in hand.

You may also find it easier if you leave the pump in the freezer overnight before attempting to inflate the shock, since cold air being more dense than warm air means you should then be able to force more in at each stroke.

Good luck. Hope this helps

you'd think e-bikes would have inbuilt compressors.

Did you tape the crystals next to the hose or not?

OP - That's a Low pressure pump, you'll need it higher than the shock if you want any chance of getting 250psi in it. Everyone knows its easier to pump down right??

Fill up the airbed to 250 psi first, then just swap the hose over. Massive reservoir of high pressure air is what you need.

😆 You could sellotape your arse to it and let one rip, it'll inflate in seconds that way.

Easiest way of doing it will be to just pump your bike tyres up to 50psi then connect a hose between your tyre and the shock. Then deflate the tyre so that it inflates the shock. Do this five times from 50psi and you will be at 250psi.

Would be even quicker if you used a road bike with tyres at 100psi.

Inwoods. Brilliant post, love it. But just in case you are serious your options are :

1) go back to the bike shop and ask them to set the shock up for you or if you can borrow a pump.

2) tell us where you are based and see if you can borrow a pump from one of us?

3) one of us will sell you a pump, I think I've got 4!

4) go buy a new pump.

5) hire a shockwiz and pump and get your set up perfect. They cost around £20 a day to hire. Again, I have one for hire, I'm based in West Yorkshire.

Thanks for making me laugh.

I liked the idea of using the air bed or tyre to transfer the air over but the air bed is popped and using a tyre would take too long having to do it 5 times to get to 250 psi so I came up with something easier, theres now sand everywhere but its definitely working, I also noted the comment about sellotape only been rated to 20 psi so upgraded the connection to a plaster, its way stronger.

Use your normal bike pump to inflate the tyres to 125 psi, then connect them to the shock one at a time. 2 x125 = 250

Easy.

Connect the hose from the pump to the pump air intake, this will make the air circulate through the pump, concentrating it and increasing its pressure. You should quickly be able to get it up to 250psi, and then release it in to the shock.

I said airbed not dinghy. Can you not even follow the simple instructions you're getting on here?

🙂

The airbed method works best if you and a tubby friend bounce up and down on it at the moment of 'transfer'. You could probably get 500 psi for a moment or two if you put in enough vigorous effort.

I might use this trick for seating tubeless tyres (minus the small child).
