My 10-year-old Lumicycles have pretty much given up the ghost, finally (purchased May 2011!!) so need a replacement.
I've done a spreadsheet and everything, with Lumi Apogee and Exposure Maxx D coming out best in bang-for-bucks (I've had excellent service from my Joysticks over the last umpteen years too so no queries on reliability).
Lumicycle £353, 4000 lumens for 2.11hrs and 2200 lumens for 4hrs (my night rides are upto 4 hrs usually but occasional all-night rides)
Maxx D £385, 4000 lumens for 1.25hrs and 2500 lumens for 2hrs so therefore 1250 lumens for 4 hrs.
I quite fancy an all-in-one light as its easier to mount with bikepacking gear in the way and no cables, but would 1250 lumens be enough? Its probably what my old Lumi's are providing which is feeling a bit under-powered compared to mates lights these days (riding in your own shadow is annoying).
Which way would STW go?
(Fully expecting a hundred and one other options too, of course!)
I'm impressed with my Ravemen 800 for use on the road with a flood for off road. 800 is not going to meet your requirements but they do a 1600. The road mode is really good.£125 with plenty cash left over for additional light
I use a MAXX-D, usually in Pgm 3. Low mode is suitable for most riding and I bump it up to High for short spells. That gives me loads of light (Low mode is 24 hrs worth)
I would go Four4th- either a Holy Moses or a Rameses (all in one with removable battery) on the bars and supplement with additional batteries if you need more runtime. Add a scorch on the head + batteries and you will have a top draw set up.
Funnily enough I’ve been emailing four4th today about which bar/helmet pairings they’d suggest. The advice they gave was not to go for the Rameses + Scorch combo because the bar light is significantly more powerful than the helmet light and it would be overpowered.
It’s a bit of a shame because I think that’s the combo I’d want for the all-in-one cable free life. @yak have you got personal experience of this combo? Does it work okay in practise?
The other option I was considering is this setup from Outbound Lighting which a friend has and strongly recommends. The downside is that shipping from the US is likely to be slow and both lights have fewer lumens.
Might be worth looking at the Monteer 8000s from magicshine? It’s not all in one, but running at one of its lower settings should last a fair while... I have the 3500 which is as bright as the sun 🙂 has a smaller battery and still lasts really well. It’s done two hours plus without getting low so far and the 8000 has a bigger battery.
I’ve got the latest Maxx D I think. You can’t run it on a flat 4000 lumens setting as far as I’m aware. The highest is 2500.
To get 4000 you have to run it on reflex setting - which it says will generally last 3 hours. That assumes that it dims the light when you’re sitting stationary and fairly dim on slow climbs - it then whacks the light up when it senses a lot of quick movements. I’ve found it pretty decent so far. I guess for 4 hours you’d have to run it on a lower reflex setting to eek it out long enough.
I’m not that impressed so far with the Axis on the helmet - although I haven’t tried it for a proper ride since I got it back with a software update. Side by side next to my supposedly lower power Moon Vortex Pro it looks underwhelming. If it’s not good I might see if I can return as as not the advertised power.
@appltn - no, a Holy Moses/Scorch combo. Works well. What's really good is on a medium Holy and low scorch you get just over 4 hours of decent light. So when Mrs Yak does 24hr solos it makes it easy to keep track of everything and not muck up light swaps.
When I use them it's full whack bring-the-sun for mucking about in the woods.
I got the latest Joystick in the Autumn. Not been used much. Flickers...hopefully getting it fixed/replaced will not be too painful 🙁
i assume the maxx d settings are the same as my six pack, i just run it on the highest reflex setting but not sure that will actually always last 3 hours so climbing, fireroads and road sections just turn it onto low, still plenty of light for that sort of riding. i would think i could get something like 5 hours doing that. and then there is the lower reflex settings if you wanted even longer.
there's no way i'd go back to seperate batterys and cables again.
I have one on the bars and one on the helmet (though mine are Evolva X8 - exactly the same - mine have a tripod screw underneath, and I think these do)

This on the bard for the bar light (note - it's 31.8mm, so if bars are over-oversize, i.e. 35mm you'll need something else)

I run a pair of Four4th lights. My bar light is a 4600L Holy Moses with green LED's and I use their Gravity bar mount so the light and the battery are sort of combined.

My helmet light is one of their original Exodus models from 10 years ago which is still going strong. It's only 1200L but it does a great job and in my experience you don't need the helmet light to compete with the bar one, as it's mainly for seeing what's not straight ahead of you, when you turn your head to look at what's coming next etc.
I've got the Magicshine Monteer 3500 as well, really impressed. Huge runtime and very good spread of light from selectable spot and flood lamps.
Olight. Co branded with magicshine.

3 options. 800 / 1500/ 2000
All come with bar mounts with are actually garmin shaped mounts. Very useful.
All in one design.
Great price and value. Im very pleased.
I have it on good authority Magicshine have a sale starting tomorrow...
I was going to buy a 3500, but I'm getting a 6500 now as soon as the sale starts.
I bought a nesting light off Amazon for £20 and it’s surprising good. Could get out competed easily though

Yeah they posted on FB that a sale would start tomorrow. They also had a 20% off offer on boxing day.
+1 for the Outbound lighting set up. November 2019, i took delivery of the Ultimate Downhill package (external batteries). This morning I took delivery of the latest version (internal batteries) which were ordered on the 8th Dec. Less Lumens - yes, but the light beam makes up for it, no light bleeding into areas you don't need it too, just a distinct cut off line in the areas you need to see. Its based around automotive light engineering. Have a look at the website, all the science is explained on there.
Both sets are beautifully engineered & idiot proof to use, USB-c charging. Adaptive setting, so the light dims ever so gradually to save battery & as your eyes become accustomed to the dark.
I got an Exposure Toro a few months ago and very pleased with it. It replaced an old Hope Vision 4 so is about 3 times as bright, the reflex thingy seems to work OK. My rides are generally no longer than 2 hours 15 mins so plenty of burn time on there for me on setting 5 I think. Paired with an old (mk4) Diablo which is OK but burn time is pretty low these days so might need to replace that at some point.
SDJ sports often have them a bit cheaper.
I love my Maxx D and Diablo for the built in batteries, I did years of Cree stuff with lots of cables and battery packs, I will not be going back!
I have the Holy Moses and OMG combo on the bigger (not the bottle) batteries for both. Managed to do London to Brighton on both with no issues this July.
They both work really well on medium for fast (for me) trail riding and then I drop them down to low for general riding.
I think I've only ever used them on high a few times.
been through a whole bunch of different lights until I got the MaxxD. The whole single unit and brightness changing according to how you are riding is fantastic. It just works and keeps working
