Thinking about getting a disc road bike, but I'm very happy with everything I have other than the frame (would need hubs and calipers obvs, happy with mechanical).

What's good value? I've not trawled eBay yet and could use bike to work. I'd like something light (am used to a 865gm Supersix). Any steel-freehub bodied hubs around?

Orange R9 frames with a third off at the mo, look decent as mile munchers.

Bowman Palace.
But be prepared for what ever road disc frame you get to being heavier than your old SS.
I also had a SS H/M weighing in at 6.1kgs and a Trek Emonda SLR at 6.4kgs. Current summer bike is an Emonda SLR disc, even with the RSL 37 wheels it’s just a touch over 7kgs.
Friend has the Bowman, his is about 8kgs with deep wheels and running Ultegra Di2. It’s very nice. In fact I was tempted to sell my Emonda to get the Bowman.

I'm enjoying the Pah Humbug threads on some of the other road bike specific forums concerning disc on road bikes.. Not that Im a member of them, but its fun to read many of the comments.

Over the decades it's been canti versus v brake, canti versus magura hydraulic rim brake, V versus disc, canti versus disc. Magura rim versus disc 😆

I keep half looking for a replacement with disk brakes. The new supersix isn't cheap!

Novatec hubs have their ABG insert, does the job of a steel freehub without the weight (or cost).

So does anyone have any recommendations for a disc frame set?

Or am I better just getting a bike? Cheapest I saw at Edinburgh bike co op was Ultegra for £2.2K 😯

Could just get a nice rim braked bike which will be cheaper and lighter.

I'm not sure there are any real world situations outside of commuting or gravel that actually benefit from any additional stopping power.

Disc-laimer: I live in Cambridgeshire so steep hills and rain are not really a problem.

I'm up in the Dales this week, it's scary coming down some U/C roads on the CX bike let alone on skinny tyres 🤣

Bowman is available as frame only from August.
Not sure when Standert will be back in stock, but great looking frames.
Kinesis Aithein, in stock. https://www.merlincycles.com/kinesis-aithein-disc-road-frameset-172179.html
Big fan of the Kinesis, quite a racy position.
Fairlight Strael (I’d go for a Secan and two wheel sets)….stock due in August.

As above, I already have one.

Kinesis Aithein

1.6kg for the frame...my CAADX weighs that!

Anything carbon or light?

I've got a rose X lite with ultegra and hunt wheels, nice bike not weighed it and a fairlight secan fairlight heavier but super comfy, although the rose is not uncomfortable, @woodster I like the look of the palace disc frameset to replace the rose, how does your friend find it?

Bowman Palace.

This, I want one badly, got to sell my current frame to fund it though.

The weight for the Athien will be F&F not just frame.

Karnali, he loves it. He went from a Trek Emonda SLR disc (full dura ace di2) to the Palace disc. Still has nice wheels on it, it looks awesome. He thinks it’s got some sort of witch craft about it, honestly it climbs really well. The handling is superb, highly recommended.
He ordered his as a full bike end of last year, had a bit of a delay as did pretty much all bikes, only 1 month later though.
He’s done a few swap outs since, zipp bars, stem and seat post.
He has a set of zipp fire crest 303 wheels but also really rates the noble hand builds it came with, about 50mm but can’t remember the exact size.

The Kinesis is a fast bike. I know a guy local to me with one, he’s a very strong rider but the bike does not hold him back. The purple is a real nice colour as well. It’s an aggressive race bike. As mentioned above the weight is frame and fork, you could do an 8kg build for not a massive amount of money.

You won’t get many 7kg disc brake bikes without spending a lot of cash. My Emonda is just over 7kgs and the price is eye watering. Maybe Canyon could be an option? But not sure on availability.

Personally I’d take the Bowman and the Kinesis over most carbon bikes. Especially most sub £5k bikes.
I’d honestly swap out my Emonda for the Bowman, but the wife would castrate me!

Yeah you’re right,2kgs for frame, seatpost clamp, mech hanger and cable guides. The Kinesis is £760.
Supersix Evo Disc is 1500 grams for frame and fork, £1800.
My Emonda is 1370 grams (F&F) but £3500 and next to impossible to buy as a frame set.
Looking at Sigma, they have R Series Disc in stock, £2800.
Argon 18 Galium Pro, size medium available. Top frame.
They also have the cheaper CS Version of the Argon 18 Galium, £1300. I think this will be closer to 2kg F&F as well.
A very beautiful Cinelli Nemo Tig seems to be available…. https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Cinelli/Nemo-TIG-Disc-Road-Frameset/HIQH

I think most disc road frames are going to be nudging 1300 grams, maybe 450 grams for light forks.

Value terms, I’d probably look at a full built bike. Frames seemed priced to put you off buying them.

Kinda puts to bed the arguments about disk vs rim stopping power though if it needs almost (more than?) a pound more material to reinforce the frame against the extra forces!

And I'm not sure disc frames need to weigh much more. MTB ones certainly didn't, my guess is there's not enough knowledge around about the weights. Are aluminium frames ever below 1kg for calipers? From memory my CAAD10 was 1.3kg, the CAAD12 1.2? It is odd that Kinesis can't go lighter, they were doing 1.3kg frames 25 years ago.

Was just googling something else and found some FB posts from Bowman saying 130-140g extra frame weight and 80g extra fork weight for going disc.

Ah the good old CAAD 10, I had the 2013 Black Inc edition. With light tubulars that was about 7.5kgs if I remember correctly. Wasn’t a great ride but looked awesome.....but then again it was 2013 and 23mm tyres were all the rage.
I thought the CAAD 12 and 13 had gained weight? For some reason I’m sure the CAAD13 is a relatively porky thing?
The 2019 Trek Emonda ALR was a decent weight in rim brake, was 1.4kgs for f&f. New one has gained about 300 grams, it’s still 200 grams lighter than the disc brake frame and fork.

My alu gravel bike f&f is 2500 grams. Yikes!! Due to get it in September.

I’ve just been loitering over at the Bowman site again.....my Emonda might be up for sale later today....

Well I have bought a Vitus Vitesse disc off of the eBay, will see what it's like.

Can I shove post mount brakes on flat mount, with an adaptor? So I can use cables.

If you can find a CAAD12 disc frame they are pretty light. I've had a disc Aithein and got a Kinesis Racelight disc. Both much porkier than the CAAD12 (which my Dad has).

New Giant TCR frames are pretty darn light and well priced (£1500), but good luck finding one.

**EDIT** Ah, just seen you've already bought something

The Virus is 1.2kg frame and 500gm fork with axles, which aren't light! Which seema not bad, a bit lighter than a CAAD12, and I'd have needed to buy new hubs anyway.

Cheers for the advice all, is there a go to hubset, ideally with a steel freehub body?

Several hours on a relaxed build in the fresh hell world that has internal cable routing. I have found that my BB30 chainset has an axle too short for the BB (PF30?) but have a compact that will work.

Stupidly fitted the BB before the rear brake cable and have no idea how to remove it (will Google) I am guessing around 1kg heaver than my Supersix all in (BB5s and some axis hubs)
