I've been riding discs on my mountain bike for 10 years and I know they are the best way to stop, that's not in doubt, but I'm trying to build a cross bike for under £1000 and it feels like I could get more for my money with regards to frame and wheels if I just went with cantilevers
thoughts?
kaffenback with 32 cross tyres

Depends what it's primary use will be, if racing then stick with cantis, however if it's mostly going to be on the road then discs could be worth considering, that said I find mini v's better than cantis but will fit a f+f that are designed for cantis and work with STI's without travel agents, the TRP ones are supposed to be excellent.
yeah not looking for brand new off the shelf as I have a groupset already, would consider a full bike second hand for the frameset - got about £600 to spend on frame, wheels and finishing kit (and I do want to spend at least £200 on wheels)
but as well as value it's options I suppose, I'd have more choice of wheels and frame if I didn't limit myself to discs
yeah Bazz it's not for racing, it will be like 66% road 33% trail/gravel, I want something that can handle all the simple trails my mtb does now, but is nippy on the road also, just want something more versatile than a road bike basically
will say it again - kaffenback (second hand)
Chinese carbon if you already have the parts, sub £300 for frame, forks & delivery
I could buy that but I'd never enjoy a ride again with all the wondering when it's going to get me killed etc
If you take a Giant in a small frame size, buy Jamie's TCX SLR 2. I love mine.

OP is 6'3". So a touch too small.
I'm v happy with my Salsa va?a with TRP hydraulic discs and bar end shifters. I've always hated cantis and think discs are fab in the wet.
I got a good deal on the frame putting it under your budget but dunno what's available now.

He could shrink into it???
I built up an old mtb frame with drops 700c wheels and canti's just to see if I would like and use - loved it but realised that on some road sections I was slower than on my knobby tyred 26" mtb
put this down to lack of confidence in the braking and went to disc and much prefer
depends a bit on what you ride and in what weather - I know a road god will outride me on a swoopy road descent on a dry day but on a wet day I'll be out in the narrow country lanes and like the confidence that I've got the braking consistency to avoid a tractor interface on the next bend
off road for me canti's are fine
yeah discs it is then
just can't wait for the right disc frame to come along while seeing all these nice canti frames pass me by at decent prices
i don't race so might seem a bit ignorant but I think people have posted before about the seasonality of CX frame sales after the season finishes and people start planning for the next season - should be quite a few disc frames starting to appear, think this 2nd or 3rd season been legal? - plenty of commuters on cx's but i guess they either get ridden into the ground or hand around until a clear out of unused stuff in the garage

speaking as an official underachiever at height - its a definite fact all the best 2nd hand frames are large!
