I'm building up a hardtail (kind of on a budget but that's debateable!).

Looking at brakes.

I could take the Hope Tech M4s off my full suss for a while, but I'd then have to find replacements eventually, and the HT is internal routing so swapping around will be a faff.

I have a front Shimano BR-M 446 brand new, so could get a rear 486 from Woolly Hat Shop to match that. Are these reasonable, given that I have been used to M4s?

I could do without spending a couple of hundred quid on Hope X2s, but am tempted and could afford them at a push.

SLX full sets look like £150 ish, so not a bargain.

Any suggestions?

Would Deore be slumming it too much?

M615 are £47 an end on CRC...

I spotted Deores at £46 odd at Wiggle, reckon they will do the job tbh.

Best bargain?

https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-m355-disc-brakes-front-rear-set-98790.html

£32 delivered front and rear.

Unbelievable how they do it.

That's a great deal at Merlin. You'd struggle to buy a replacement lever and a set of f&R pads for £32.

I have those brakes from Merlin on my commuter. They've been faultlessly reliable which is more than I can say for the much fancier XT and Hope brakes I've had.

I'm taking a set of those M355's off my wifes bike this week (got a set of SLX sitting around the garage so thought I'd whack them on) that I'd be more than willing to part with (very little use, had them on the bike for two years, shes probably done 30 miles tops). Discs as well if you want them.

BTW, the M355's I've got are all black, rather than the white levers on Merlin.

I bought a F+R set of the white Merlin ones that arrived today.

I've changed plans so if anyone wants them for cost + post I can send them to you rather than back to Merlin.

I've just installed a set of Clarks M2 brakes, £35 for front and rear. Use mineral oil and shimano pads.
To be honest, for the price they really are excellent. I bought them as a stop gap, but I'm not sure I'll bother changing them until they "break"!!
