So ive taken the gears off for winter and i want to now run it single speed, the crankset on at the moment is currently an xtr m985 and so im strugling to find singlespeed chainrings, ive also seen a photo on here of a dirty harry single speed with what looked like no chain tensioner, can this always be done of does it need a chain tensioner and if so what are the best ones. Any help would be apprieciated and thanks in advance.

the DH single speed is my mates, it runs with a rotor Q elliptical ring/cranks and a white industries eno hub which has a small throw of adjustment for singlespeeding vertical drop out frames.
no easy wins really if you want it to look nice and work well.
