Last nights shoulder/head impact resulting in a broken collar bone ,cut hand and face has got me thinking If helmets with visors aren't a bit dangerous.
So I'm wondering If my replacement shouldn't just be a dirt jump lid , Obviously they are going to be kind of cosy in the summer . Any other disadvantages ?.

I have removed the peak from my helmet after seeing a few folk get cuts from them

I have a dirt jump style lid as well- used at GT sometimes - take it off for the climbs or your head boils. I also sometimes use it when cold.

That was my thinking TJ , the type of riding I do hardly warrants a full facer .

My current lid is a protec, that I use for skating and riding, its got lots of holes in it and isn't too bad on the climbs...

All bike helmets are ****ing horrible and DJ lids are the absolute horriblist! - even hotter with poorer head retention.

You can borrow my Protec to find out for yourself. What size is your head?

Rizla - number of vents alone has **** all to do with how well vented a lid is.

You'll need protection when Mike baths you 😉

A pisspot helmet will make you look like a proper bell end. You can borrow my bamboo lid if you want to look like a fud.

I ride with a protec, I look a bell end, which is fitting, and I get too hot. I love it.

Well GW, My last helmet had less holes and was definitely hotter... so maybe the internal routing of the vents is better also on this new one?

Have a Giro Section, a Bell Faction and a Fox Transition. I like the extra coverage but Fox Flux/661 Recon etc look like mushrooms on my massive head.

The Bell weighs a ton but is OK for starting out.
The Transition is a lot lighter and is like a DJ-stylee Flux/Recon without the retention system
The Section is ace - very, very light typical Giro quality with good venting not too hot for Summer

Been riding with an urge endur o matic for the last couple of months. Best lid I've ever had, hardly notice I'm wearing one and the peak is flexible enough to not be an issue in a crash. Ventilation while riding is superb but gets a tad warm if you stand still for too long on really hot days.

How about getting a road-oriented helmet. No peak, usually quite good airflow (my Bontrager Oracle is fantastic compared to my Xen) and probably (unscientific opinion ahoy) as safe as a standard MTB lid.

Papa Laz had one on last Saturday, and looked remarkably un-bell-endy*

He had a bit of a 'special' moment, on the road, and hit the tarmac pretty hard, head first. There wasn't a mark the lid and he was ok. I doubt he'd have been so lucky with a traditional peaked lid

* This word keeps getting bigger and bigger. How appropriate

The other downside is fit, an XC/road lid has a cradle that holds your head and the polystyrene bit floats on top arround the back, so as long as the front is the right shape it'll probably be comfortable. DJ lids (if you have a big head) have no padding and are f**** uncomfortable unless they fit your head perfectly.

If you're worried about the visor, just buy another XC lid and remove the visor. Thats what I do with my E2 for road rides.

Badly compromised in it effectiveness mind you but who cares so long as yo have a helmet on and its comfy

for a helmet to be effective you should not be able to get a finger between poly and the skull anywhere

I ride a dirt helmet for most stuff, protection is better but yes, they are hotter. You can get a superlight version of the TSG or Bell ones I think which makes some difference.

Mind you, if I ride Snowdon, I replace the dirt helmet for a tweed flat cap, for fear of looking a twunt to walkers. 😀

Within reason, if you walk arround looking like a super mario mushroom then yes it's probably going to be less effective. I meant that unlike a DJ lid there's scope for adjustment and it's not actualy pressing on your head whereas a DJ helmet is pretty solid and unadjustable.

I've got a massive and odly shaped head, thankfully so does whoever models for Giro so my E2 fits perfectly, but I've never found a comfortable piss-pot.

why thank you binners.

It's a Protec, bought for the following reasons:

1. Keep my head warm in the winter.
2. It was £12 from the Vans shop sale at Cheshire Oaks
3. Doesn't look too bad on my massive sweede.

I was gald I had it on rather than my normal Giro E2 when I hit the deck. It may get used a bit more from now on.

look at Urge, specifically the enduro helmet. I have one. The visor is very floppy and if in a crash, it'll get ripped off and go behind your head out of harms way.

They're on sale too at CRC. Beware the sizing though

You just missed getting a Sabrina Jonnier signature Undur-O-Matic for £32 from CRC... It's not even THAT pink!

I did the Fox transition and red O-frame goggles look for a while 😆

Are you wearing other armour? Sounds like there's more to consider her than just whether you have a peak or not.

Get well soon!

Been riding with a Giro Feature all winter that I bought specifically for riding in big hills. Like it very much so far.
