This is probably a spectacularly stupid question, but here goes. Can I fit a direct mount rear mech to a standard dropout? Or will it a) not work, b) cause the end of Western civilisation as we know it?

If it's shimano you need the wee linky thing from the top of the mech- the "direct mount" mechs are just the normal mech with one part removed.

If you buy a new derailleur it should have the required bit (B-knuckle) to work with normal hangers. If you buy it used, make sure to ask for it.
