Just looking at a groupset on bike discount.de and they offered me all these choices; I get direct mount , top swing is cable coming from above and down swing from under the BB (?) but what is e type?
have you googled them for examples? It's pretty much a direct mount but with a plate which replaces a BB spacer and has a small bolt to the frame to stop it rotating.
Top swing and bottom swing are not the cable pull. That is cable pull - ie top/bottom/dual pull.
It means the position of the pivot.
E-type is BB mounted like a chain device. Sometimes they have an extra securing bolt into the frame too. Usually high forward pivot suspension frames with no room to mount one in the days before direct mount. My old Prophet had an e-type.
Bottom swing, ie conventional/high clamp: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=20685
Top wing, ie low clamp: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=20684

Cheers andyl, so basically it gives options to fit around swing arms etc.
If I'm riding a hardtail I guess I go with a bottom swing
yeah pivots, bottle mount bosses etc.
Some FS frames need the top swing for clearance, the conventional is generally regarded as the best lasting as the pivots are typically beefier. I have to use one on my carbon fame as the frame tapers out for the BB join right where the top swing clamp would be but I have now fitted them to all my bikes for consistency (ie if one breaks I can swap it over).
