Hi all,
At the weekend I put a ding in my rear rim, a Stans S1 Flow. I lost a fair bit of pressure, down to around 10 psi. I rode back to the car on the road without losing anymore. Now I'm back home and the bike is cleaned up, it looks like a hefty enough dent. I have put 30 psi in it and a quick ride up the street and back, it has held pressure, so I'm assuming it has sealed okay.
How likely am I to have any further issues? I have a 2.3 HR2 on there.
I'd like to share a couple of photos, but no idea how to on this forum any longer. Worst case scenario is buy a new rim, although it would need to be a Mk3 Flow as the S1 isn't available as a rim only option. Or, just run a tube.
Thanks
Colin
Bend the ding back? I did this on a set of wheels a decade ago and they are still fine. depends on how bad the damage is

Thats nothing. Get a adjustable spanner on it and carefully bend it back out.
Yeah, that'll be fine. You could probably bend it out quite easily but if it was me and it doesn't cause any issues I'd just leave it.
(fair chance that your loss of pressure was tyre not rim)
I'd just leave it, but maybe avoid looking at it.

What he said. If it seals, the small chance of putting a crack in it bending it back isn't worth it. The air loss was probably from the tyre, I've had pinch flats on tubeless without dinging rims to any noticeable extent.
I would bend it back which I have done on a couple of occasions
I once watched the Mavic guys hammering dinged rims back to shape at an Enduro event in Les Orres
I was amazed at how good they were at this and how quick it was taking them to get the riders back out on the trail.
Is that the sticker that's creased on the sidewall, or the rim? if it's the rim then I'd keep a close eye on it and probably replace it if I was going to be riding somewhere I couldn't walk home from.
Does depend on how bad the ding is and whether there's any other damage.
I did my rear rim last year on a water bar. When I got home I got a pair of pliers on it and bent it back, put the tyre back on and it held pressure. Unfortunately the hit had also caused a spoke to, for want of a better word, compress, it had forced the nipple down the threaded end of the spoke so the spoke was effectively always loose. This then meant that the wheel slowly went out of true, it also seems to have affected the ability of the rim to hold pressure - I think it's because the spoke moves so if I ride over an edge with that point of the wheel it gets pushed against the tape thus creating somewhere for the air to leak out.
At easter I had to put a tube in it, worryingly just before the same section of trail that had caused the damage a year earlier, today I put a new wheel in. The old one was six years old, I'll keep the hub (Hope Pro 2 Evo) as it's still in fine order.
Whilst I agree with tj that can easily be fixed I'd be wary of attacking it with an adjustable spanner.
I took one to my crest rim when it had a similar ding, managed to flatten the rim hook so that the bead wouldn't seat properly.
I'm sure it can be done if you aren't a ham fisted ape like me, but proceed with caution, as I think stans rims are pretty soft. Your lbs will probably have a tool to do it properly.
Thanks for all the quick replies. It's the sticker that has creased, which is stressing me out just as much....

Bend it back, you will be fine 🙂

I've had similar, gently bent back, been fine for years. Results may very, you may very well die.
Now the shed on the other hand, looks like you may have a bit of rot at the bottom.

Put it the other way round when taking your Instabangers?
I use an adjustable spanner to bend out dings and have done loads but i find its worth putting a metal ruler on the rim edge so the adjustable spanner doesn't mark the rim
Surprised it took so long to notice the absolute mess of a shed.

Good point.
Thats nothing.
This held pressure for over a year...

that'll be fine, got several on my rear Stans Hugo, thing refuses to die and holds tubeless just fine.
Can I just comment on the cleanliness of your tires and wheels? Remarkable!

You should see the rest of it....
lowey, that's impressive!

It is my neighbor's fence, not the shed. And they replaced it anyways last weekend.
Cheers!
