My bikepacking HT is 1x10. I use a triple xt chainset with a single NW ring in the middle position.

In a budget effort to get more range of gear...esp lower, i have decided to go back to 2x10.

I have bought a new XT fd 8020 but when i cable it up, and try and operate it with SRAM x7 front shifter (2sp) it doesnt pull enough cable to make the mech move from the inside ring to the middle position. Are these two items not compatible? Am i doing anything wrong? I run an 11sp rear shimano mech with a 10sp shimano rear shifter and there is no problem.

Could the front shifter be 9sp? How do i tell? its brand new and was given to me by a friend.

Im getting v frustrated here....argh

I'm not sure about different cable pull between 10 & 11 speed, but I thought that SRAM & Shimano were different; can you get hold of a Shimano shifter?

I also don't know how well it'll shift in general as I don't think that N/W rings are meant to exist in multi-ring setups, unless you've changed it of course.

i have changed the rings to the rings that came on the chainset originally. They are 'shifting' rings with cut outs and ramps.

I can get a shimano 10sp rear shifter, but the 2x Sram one just seemed a little neater. Obviously thats useless now it doesnt work together.

I had asked on here before i implemented the plan, but maybe the spec of the shifter is different.

Surprised, SRAM/Shimano have almost always been different for RD pull, but last time I tried (X9 shifter and FDM785) there was no problem. Haven’t run an FD since leaving 2x10 a few years ago now. It might have changed for M8000 but I don’t see any particularly good reason. Are you absolutely sure the FD is cabled correctly?

Agree with PJay on the NW middle ring though. The entire point of NW is not allowing the chain off the ring. You are going to have problems with that...

In the past I've ran Sram shifter with shimano front mech and not had any issues. I always thought it was rear sram/shimano compatibility that was a no no.unless you had a 5mm(?) spacer on the mech somewhere

Is the front mech a 2x or a 3x?

Are you sure its set up and cabled up correctly??

Ok...an update...i have made a mistake....

the front shifter that was given to me had the clamp the wrong way round, putting the levers in contact with the handlebar, so it coulddnt pull the correct amount of cable...yes i am an idiot 🙂

The problem now is that the 10sp chain is wider than an 11sp, so it is not possible to eliminate chain and fd cage rub in several gears.

Thanks to everyone who helped. I do have normal shift rings on, not NW. The NW was only used for 1x duties.

I'd check to see what kind of mount you have on the derailleur, ie.Band on High mount,Low mount, Direct mount etc.

Then check the Shimano tech docs to see how the cable should be routed for the relevant mount.

Might be a case that you have cabling routed incorrectly or inner cable clamped in the wrong position, could also be the FD is mounted too high/low.

EDIT: Can see you have it sorted now.
