Up Gunnerside Gill, heard a deep single croak like a bullfrog, then another & another. Then a big black crow like bird flew past.
Could it have been a Raven up there or was it a Crow?

If you could hear the wings beating then definitely a raven, if not probably a crow. Ravens are just such a more powerful bird and flyer, you can hear their wings from quite a way away

Ravens croak definitely, so sounds like one 🙂

Ravens also have a wide vocabulary - croaking is only a small part of what they do. Excellent birds and possibly the most intelligent there is.

Not sure about the hearing the wings beating bit. That sounds like an old wives tale to me. Maybe if it was very close or it was taking off nearby you could hear the wings. Almost certainly a Raven if it was making croaking cronky type noises though. They are much more common than they used to be.

No old wives tale - on a still day you can hear the wing beats when a raven flies overhead even if it's at a fair altitude. I love to hear that "whoo whoo whoo"....

Andy R is spot on about hearing Raven wingbeats. It is very characteristic as is diamond shaped tail and extended neck (far more than any other Corvid)
I live on the edge of Exmoor and see as many ravens as I do any other garden bird !!

Couldn't hear any wing beats but it was a bit breezy, couldn't make out a diamond shaped tail either cos it was pretty level. Just that deep croak & where it was, made me wonder.
I was actually keeping an eye out for Ring Ouzels as I've seen them up there.
Everyone's heard a crow, & it sounded naff all like a crow!
