My new bike from last summer that's been sat for a few months as now its winter bike time. Anyway I fired the Di2 into action and connected to the app to check the battery state and the app first off started to moan that half the gear items have new firmware available.

Question is the gears obviously worked before the winter so I am guessing its optional to update, or is it a good rule to update FW when its available?

Whats your thoughts?

(Tick)

I don't know the answer to this but keen to hear people's experience. I'm guessing the firmware is to support 12spd but I've not updated mine (11spd Gruppo)

No need to update, but if you do, use the laptop in the house with wifi, I nearly bricked mine doing with the App. This was 2 years ago.

I’d go a step further and use the laptop with the cable to do the firmware. As above, the app almost bricked mine.

No need to update unless you’re adding, changing or seeing an issue.

When I first got Di2 some of the firmware updates added features. This was over 5 years ago. Things seemed to have stabilised now and I've not updated my new bike in 12 months.

It never gets plugged in to a computer so I don't even know what version it's on.

I assume when you connect it will tell you which version you are on. Somewhere on Shimano's site it will have a list of revisions and what the updates were. Given it just works I see no reason to change at this point.

If you're doing it, do it via cable, with a laptop.
I updated mine and can confirm it made zero difference to anything.

+1 use the cable

Tip: you can use the charging/power cable to connect the bike to the laptop/PC.

Thank you. I will leave well alone unless very bored.

Thanks for the laptop/cable advice

I thought the whole point was that you didn't need a cable? 😉
